It will depend on the paint used, but WD40 dissolves adhesives while being fairly easy on paint. But I would try a light application on a small area to make sure it doesn't dull the paint. Work slowly and keep applying the WD as the decal lifts. Once off, rinse thoroughly to remove any WD. Maybe not the best/only way, but worth a try.

If you use WD40 you will never paint that Boat again, you will have fish eyes everywhere, use a heat gun at a distance, just enough heat to soften the Vynal, left at one corner and aply heat slowly, take your time. If there's any glue residue left, use Silicone wax remover.( Du Pont-Nason 441-05 ) it's used in Body Shops as a prime wipe. this stuff works great. Use it all the time.

This 3M adhesive remover will take off the residue without harming the properly painted surfaces.

Like Hendo, I've always used a heat gun or hair dryer. Quick and easy.

Oh yea you gotta add heat. The adhesive remover won't take off the vinyl.

There are products that definitely will without harming the paint.
