engine temperature

Hi Scott,
Is there any trick with the temp of the zen26 to get more power, on keeping the engine as cold as possible or just on working temp.
I running a home modded zen and I have only one water pickup, after some hard pulls on the throt the head feels like on the hot side.
Will this afect some of my power, or can I leave it like this.

Hey gio, with any motor, gas, nitro, electric, whatever, the cooler you can keep it, the longer it will last, and the more power it will produce. I somewhat to boats, but have been rc trucks planes and helis since I was 15... THAT"S A LONG TIME!! and believe me... HEAT IS A KILLER.

That is only partially true, Gas powered engines however create MORE Horse Power when allowed to get hot near the 170/200 degree mark. Keeping the engines temp down below this takes away BTU potential from the combustion process.
* Hotter the top end is running the more fuel you will burn producing greater HP and more heat ... it's a balance.
Internal combustion engines will always make more power hot than cold
Truth be told wear and tear is less on a properly heated up engine that has a stabilized temp across all internal parts.

Heat in excess certainly is a killer, that's a fact, but too cool in not right either.

That's about the range I meant when I said cool... I try to keep my nitro motors all below 200. I'm kinda new to the gas boat scene, but I'm a quick learner, and just did. So I'll keep that in mind myself... :S Thanks...

Gio,
So long as engine is operating on a load engine is not struggling with ( * too much prop) having it run hot to the touch is just fine so long as carb mix on high needle is correct as well. If running hard, engines hot and water flowing out of cooling system is not yet steam ... your good :woohoo:

Thanks for the advice, I did a full mod with my zen and used your tech article on the zen porting.
I did everything I saw on you article and I making very good power.
About the temp I will leave it like that, It feels on the hot site when I touch it but I can clearly see that at this temp the engine is making the power.
I am running with a rio51 with my modded zen and I gps it at 60.9 mph.
My prop is a 67/19 and I can hear that the rpm of the engine is still to high.
This weekend I will do more tune on the carb and prop, I am sure I can go some what faster than 61 mph.

Is that celcius or fahrenheit degrees?
Maybe a stupid question, but in my country (Denmark) we only use the celcius scale, so if your advice is about fahrenheit degrees, I would like a translation to celcius.

0 degree celcius is 32 degree f. This being the freezing point of both scales... therefore the celcius temp will be about 32 degree cooler (number-wise) than Fahr. Hope this helps Woodie, I'm not a professor, I'm a pipe fabricator :silly:

That's true for the freezing point, but remember, for each rise in temp of 1 degC, it is a rise of 1.8 degF

After rough calculations the temperature of a gas engine should not exceed more than about 100 degree celcius. (The boiling point of water). Or?
