Have you checked the mixture screws? A rich condition can cause this. Don't hook a battery up to it! They are magneto type systems. A battery will melt stuff.

Hi,
There is one with electronic ignition, I guess you do not have that one.
I have only confused you with my comment, disregard this one and carry on with your investigations.

hello slap27
i think you right i am likely flooding the engine. i have the 813 carb fitted and it says not to give it any throttle on starting .i am waiting for a 257 carb and some spare spark plug to arrive so i can rule the original ones out.
thanks for the advice :good:

Make sure you have spark to the plug. Remove it from the motor and put the cap on the plug. Rest it on the motor for a ground and turn off the lights. Pull it over and see if you have an arc at the plug.

Hi Lynny,
When you get your new carb do you know how to set it up correctly?
If you don't try as follows.
Screw both the high and low mixture screw in till they bottom out, then screw them out about 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 turns. This will put you in the ball park to start and then fine tune from there.
This method works for me everytime and should work for you too. Maybe you can try it on your old carb and see what happens. With the 257 try it as it comes before you adjust it. Also check there are no air leakes in and around the carby gaskets, that is also an area where your carby problems can exist.
Hope this helps.

When setting the 257 you should start with 2-1/8 to 2-1/4 on LOW and 1 to 1-1/8 on HIGH. Some good info on setting carbs and starting your engines in this article: www.modelgasboats.com/Magazine...ng_Your_Engines

I agree with mark on this, 1 1/4 on each is too low. 1 on high, 2 on the low or more to start with.
