If we were running them as Weedeater engines, 3.5 oz to a gallon ( @40:1 ) would be just fine.
But as a higher output marine engine turning a LOT more RPM, a much richer oil mix is suggested.
Using a HIGH QUALITY 2 stroke oil, mix it at @ 7 or 8 ounces per gallon ( 20-16:1 )

We've done extensive dyno testing with various oil mixtures and power definitely improves with up to 8 oz per gallon. It may still improve with more oil, but the results aren't as clear. We have only run more where there was a problem with piston or rod bearing seizure.

well in europe its about
1ltr oil (Honda HP2 or Motul 800)
and 20 ltr off petrol (oct95) for breaking inn and
25 ltr for running
remember use good quality of 2 stroke oil
to much do no harm to your engine
wen its to less thats bad
we have 5ltr cans and i am mix 4,75 ltr fuel with 0,25 oil

Martin,
The last mix you refer to using (.25l oil to 4.75l gas) is just about 20:1 which is the same ratio you refer to earlier in your post as the break in ratio you use, even a little bit more in fact (19:1). That is pretty much the same ballpark ratio most of us use here. As Scott said, 7-8 oz per USD. Sounds like we are all doing pretty much the same thing!

Martin,
I run 0.3L oil to 2L gas. It is a ratio of 1:15. This works excellent for years. My oldest engines has burned 120 liters of fuel now. And it looks great!

WOW! Here in SA we are using 40:1 and even 60:1. Using MOTUL 800. On the Motul 800 bottle, they even suggest 66:1, which is a 1.5% oil mixture.
In my opinion, more oil, less gas = less power. More gas less oil = more power?
No failures yet.

The thing you are forgetting is that oil helps seal the single ring piston. It has been known here for years that more oil = more power. Mike Hofmeister did the first dyno testing I know about on the subject, and we have confirmed this. There is probably a point where you can have too much oil. However, rod big end bearings on Zenoah cranks are near their limit. Both Quickdraw and M&D cast cylinder engines have seen problems with extended running at 20,000 rpm. Normal Zenoahs shouldn't be operating in this area, but it shows the rod bearing limits.

Hi Lohring
Thanks for the info. Is does make sense to me what you said about the oil. I will try increasing the oil %.
We are at 6000ft above sea level. What would you suggest to be a good oil ratio:
20:1
30:1
40:1 or other. Motul 800 I believe is still one of the better oils.
Have you tried AVGAS instead of normal pump gas?
Thanks again.

Call me a sponge, and I am ready to soak up the volumes of knowledge on the forum.
So I'll soon try 20:1 fuel/oil mix and the lowest octane gas that I can find.
Will let you know the results.
