Rudder depth

sws64 created the topic: Rudder depth

Hello, I am currently building a Zipp kits V-box cracker box with a stinger drive and I am unsure how deep to put the rudder, thanks in advance.

Looks about right to me.
Might be the picture, but is the distance between centreline drive and centreline rudder 2,5 inches? Looks like the prop is going to touch the rudder blade (but might be the shadow of the prop in the picture)
Nice build the V-Box from Zippkits.
Here is another build-thread (dutch text but with pictures)

Thanks for the reply, its been thirty years since my last build, boy things sure have gotten better! I was a little skeptical about a wood boat, but this sure has been a pleasure to build. I should have added these pics before but see what you think as far as the depth. The rudder is positioned as specified in the book, it is pretty close to the prop on a hard left turn (maybe 1/4").

Unless you run straight a way or some hydros the manufactured length is pretty well spot on.

On my crackerboxes I run the rudder about 2.5 - 3.0 inches below the bottom of the strut.

I've been following this discussion, as I'm also scratch building a medium/deep V hull, and was trying to work
out how deep to set the rudder. Am using a stinger type surface drive, and have set the rudder off by 2.5 inches.
I'm in the range above so hopefully will work ok. I suppose the bottom can be cut off to shorten if required, up to the coolong intakes.

When you really don't know where to start...I feel 3" below drive is plenty. Then if you want to trim, what you do it setup your radio with as little throw as possible to get the turning performance you want, and start trimming on the blade. When it will no longer turn like you want, you can then dial in a little bit more throw on your radio and you should be good to go. :) Always good to plan for the worse though and have a spare rudder blade handy if you can afford it.

I had resized your other pics...now it looks like you deleted them? You have to keep them in your upload folder if you want them to stay active in your posts...JFYI.
