Heat protection in a wooden boat?

Woodie created the topic: Heat protection in a wooden boat?

My question is simple (I think).

The engine and exhaust in my wooden mono "My Smokin' Cigarette" will be a VERY tight pack. This means that the internal exhaust will be mounted close to the wooden spants/profiles in left side of the boat.
However I don't want to se my precious boat go self-igniting while running.
So how do I protect the wooden parts from the heat coming from the exhaust? In my case the distance to the spants/profiles and the top part/canopy could be only 5-6 milimeters.
(It IS a watercooled exhaust though).
Any usefull advice is wellcome!

Cheers! :cheer:

Get some extractor/exhaust wrap from most automotive shops and wrap the pipe, with watercooling aswell it shouldnt get too hot.
Under bonnet heat proofing can be used in the hull.
Your still going to need a fair bit of airflow with vents etc. to allow the air inside the hull to stay cool enough for optimum engine performance.

Awwwww! Your little engine is sooooo cute!

Oz & Woz

Thanks for quick and good response.
I will look for that pipe wrapping at the local dealers.
Yeah. Cooling is really an issue, when you want to run a Blata 40 in a closed hull.
But I try to do the best. The Blata comes with internal waterpump, and to support this I will use an external pump too.
The air intakes are equal important, and I consider mounting two of them in each side of the boat. One pair in a row above the exhaust, and one pair to support the engine.
That should do the job - I think...

Hey Woodie,
Just a thought about your insulation. Carmen Blois from www.needforspeed.com carries an exhaust pipe wrap, it is a tape that comes in 4 colours red, blue, yellow and black, and it only $10 bucks a roll. I am not sure if it is a heat insulation tape or not, but if you shoot him an email he can tell you. When you open his website you will see a pipe wrapped in yellow tape.
For your info.

Thanks Moof.

But when i open www.needforspeed.com/ I find only PC-games. :(

Anyway it's useless for me if the shop is not located in Europe. If I order anything from outside Europe the customers will charge me about 50 dollars just for "declaring" the import. Then comes danish VAT, which is 25 % put on both the price and the expence for declaration.
All together I would have to pay about 75 dollars - plus shipping costs...
So I am pretty much bound to ordering within Europe, unless I make a really big buy and get a really good deal. :(

Anyway thanks for trying! ;)

Cheers! :cheer:

Carmin sells the Silicone wrap tape sold domestically under the TOMMY TAPE brand. Some decent stuff made in China can be purchased from Harbor Freight tools as well.

"No soup for you!" ha ha...I like that...been a while!

Anyway, yeah, I would suggest trying the silicone wrap like Scott is showing, or the one from Carmen which is probably same kind of stuff. I think they will do fine in most situations, AND, they will be MUCH easier to apply and keep on the pipe! If that doesn`t shield enough heat then go FG.

The fiberglass tape shown in the article link above was a bit tricky to get on the pipe evenly and get it to stick there withou sliding off the cones! :) As far as heat barrier though, the FG tape is unbeleivable...bring the boat in after a long hard run and grap it by the pipe if you want! Works awesome!
