Futaba Crystals

David McIntyre replied the topic: Re: Futaba Crystals

The plug should have a R on it, or may have reference to 'resistor'. Resistor plugs are what we use in the model petrol engines as against the normal run of the mill plugs. They don't generate interferrance. Check it out with a hobby or lawnmower shop to be sure. I also note that your pipe water inlet/outlet are at 3 & 9 o'clock. Should be 12 & 6 o'clock with water coming in at the bottom.

Hi by resister incorporated sparkplug everyone means a sparkplug incorporating a R in the code on the sparkplug such as CMR6H.On NGK plugs the code is on the white porcelain part of the plug usually printed in blue. Not all sparkplugs have the resister built in especially ones used on garden machinery so just check to be safe.I once used one by mistake & my boat was revving up & down the instant i started it,never use a boat in this state because it could cause serious injury to yourself or someone.Hope this helps you understand the resister plugs which you were confused about.Regards Darren

Hi,

In using resistor plugs alright. The last time it ran it had a Champion RZ7C in it but from now on I'm going to use a NGK CMR7H.

I noticed the connector on the spark plug lead is simply a coil of copper wire (pic attached). But doesn't a coil of copper with current going through it not cause a magnetic field?? Is this the source of the problem maybe or is this type of connector standard issue?

Thanks.

Hi

I much appreciate the images as it makes your topic much better and yours is a great looking mono I must say!

On the plugs, I’m glad you’ve confirmed it is the resistor type. Both the NGK and Champion models that you referred to work fine in the Zenoah. I’ve been using the Champion R27C for two years and it still works fine.

In respect of the plug lead connector, I have seen that type used on several engines without interference issues. However personally I don’t like that design because if nothing else it can be fiddly to remove and re-connect which is a nuisance when wanting to quickly remove the plug. It is in my opinion a crude connection.

Your engine looks nearly identical to the one that came with my boat (as per earlier photos). A big difference between my engine and a genuine Zenoah is internals of the pull cord mechanism. This one needs a little care to ensure long life in use.

Forgive me if going slightly off topic now, but as you seem to have similar kit that came with my boat, I want to share an issue I faced with the fuel system (looks same tank as yours). Mine came with a clunk filter located inside the tank on the end of the pick up pipe. It was only after a few runs that the engine kept stalling soon after launching the boat. Problem was identified as the fibre clunk filter completely blocked thus fuel starvation.

I binned that filter and fitted a quality in line filter (cheap to buy) so that it is now easy to access and importantly serviceable for cleaning. I am only mentioning this because if as I suspect you have the same clunk filter fitted, I’ll put money on it that problems will result.

Cheers

Hi Craig,

Actually I removed the stock fuel tank filter from mine also because it got broken.

It is a nice looking boat which is what struck me when I bought it and it was relatively cheap but had the same specs as more expensive boats. But it would look sooo much better on the water!! Yours is a very nice one as well, I like the more racing oriented decals on it rather than the superficial ones on mine. Where did you get your radio system and how much if you don't mind my asking.

I think I'll try it at a different lake and see if the interference still continues and replace the spark plug connector other than that not much else to be done it seems.

Hi Zenoah (would much prefer to know your real name),

To answer your question on my radio gear:

I previously bought an RC chopper (helicopter) that came with Spektrum radio gear including the DX6i 2.4G transmitter.

I was so impressed with this transmitter that when it came to my boating, I bought the Spektrum dual receiver, switch harness such that I could use my preferred servos for my gas boat.

It cost me about £120 for the Spektrum dual receiver + switch harness, 5 cell battery pack and two servos including an £8 servo for the throttle and a more decent Hitech hi torque servo for the rudder.

Folks I know that use Futaba swear by its quality as being the best available.

However for my part, having switched from Futaba to Spektrum I personally prefer the Spektrum kit. It cost less money and in my opinion it is much under-rated.

Cheers

Hi Craig,

Changed my user name to my name.

Im going to change the futaba 27 Mhz system for a 2.4 system for sure, probably a tactic or spektrum.

Thanks,
Brandon.

Hi Brandon

I suspect that when you get a decent 2.4G system, your interference issues will be history.

When you do have your boat ready to run and give it its long overdue first launch, please do get it captured on video and share it with us.

I much look forward to seeing your boat in action.

Cheers
Craig
