RE: Radio/servo problem

sws64 created the topic: Radio/servo problem

Hello, I am having a problem with my servo acting erratically when I turn the system on. It will move back and forth but wont settle down, kinda like twitches, a lot. This is all new equipment, running a 6 volt battery, and a Y harness setup (but it does it without it also). The 1/4 scale servo does it worse than the smaller standard servo, the smaller one does it but very slightly. Any ideas would be appreciated thanks............Steve Here is the radio and servos I have:

Futaba 2PL-FM radio

Futaba R153F receiver

Hi-tech HS-755HB 1/4 scale servo

Hi-tech HS-322HD standard servo

First thing I would try is move your transmitter away from the model @ 10 feet or more and see if it settles downs.
Next bypass the on/off switch by hooking battery direct into servo socket.

let us know what happens doing this ?

Thanks for the reply Scott, I'll do that when I get home from work today and post the results.

OK here goes, the distance from the receiver made no difference in the way the servo acted, for the heck of it I used the 4 cell battery holder that came with the radio and everything worked fine. The battery that was giving me the problem is a 5 cell 6 volt 1700mah battery. I'm using a super brain 960 charger to charge the battery but doesnt seem to charge for very long before it sounds the beeps and goes into like a float charge mode. Even though the battery reads the correct voltage on the charger is it possible the battery still doesn't have the power to drive that 1/4 scale servo?

Nmh cells are a bugger to charge the first time, I have to manual set my charger to not exceed 500ma and slow charge em first time.
Have had every new pack of Nmh false peak if allowed charger to auto sense amp input and peak detect :nah:

May be also well over voltage .... a 4 cell on dry cells is 6 volts. A 5 cell rechargeable peaks at near 1.4v per cell having 5cells at 7 volts
Personally have burnt up 2 of the 1/4 scale Hitec 805mg's on 5 cell rechargeable packs, now just use 4 cell packs using the larger sub-c size cells.

Again, play with your charging and batter voltage .... hope we are helping :sorry:

Thanks I appreciate the help, I am using nicads, dont know if that makes a difference. So you think it may be an over voltage problem? Do you find that the 4 sub C batteries hold up longer than the 4 AA packs, I'm concerned the big servo will deplete the AA's quickly.

So we are left assuming by your statement you were using 5 nicads originally ? ... which would be 1.5v x5 = 7.5v
If thats the case, WAY TOO HIGH of voltage !

4 cells actually last long than 5 .... with the increased voltage using 5, amp draw on each cell increases actually taking away duration of current.

Yes that is correct, I'm going to order a 4.8volt 4 sub C battery pack. I am still a little confused why it says 6 volts on the 5 cell battery pack, I can't confirm that each cell is in fact 1.5 volts. Thanks for the help Scott...............................Steve

AA NiCD and NiMH are 1.2 V per cell, so 5 x 1.2=6V, but at peak charge they will have a higher voltage (as scott said, close to 7V). Alkali cells (the non rechargeable ones) are 1.5V per cell which is why only 4 are needed in a pack. NiMH cells don't hold a memory like the NiCD cells and are better for what we use them for. They also hold their voltager longer than NiCD cells.

If the pack is brand new, try cycling the pack a few times to see if it wakes up.

OK I'll try that, thanks for the help guys, at least now I know that my equipment isn't faulty.......................Steve
