I used to go to the hardware stores, but didn't like having to buy large packets of nuts, bolts etc, and their prices are quite expensive. I now use an engineering supplies store that is quite happy to supply small quantities of whatever I need, especially when they know what I'm using them for.

I go to my local marine store. They have rows of stainless fasteners in both metric and imperial sizes.
