Stuffing tube part numbers?

Mercury94 created the topic: Stuffing tube part numbers?

I have been using Aeromarine teflon lined stuffing tubes for some time. For my next build I wanted to to use plain brass type tubes. Went to local shop and all the KS tube seemed a little sloppy. What are the part numbers to use for 1/4 inch cable? Are there people using a tube inside a tube for flex cables? :S

I have used the chrome plated copper tube for sink and toilet plumbing, it works okay but I still use the teflon tube as well. The teflon can be sourced from Industrial plastics suppliers but they usually want to sell the roll or many many feet at a time.I haven't bothered to size the tube yet but I think it should be easily available at metal suppliers. Stainless steel tube is nice but very difficult to bend and springy.

Thanks I will look around. Found that the the teflon can melt or stick to inside of tube making it very difficult or impossible to get out. I have even seen it "ball" up.

Did that happen using oil or grease? I found it has to be grease to work best. I had the same problem when I tried an autolube type setup. With grease I have no problems and run all day long. After a days run I pull the flex out, wipe it clean, whip the water out, spray it with water displacement formula #40 and hang it. Next run time I grease it up and go.

Lots of folks use the K&S 5/16 O.D. tube for 1/4" cables.
Personally feel they are too sloppy as you do !!
I typically need to special order it, but K&S makes a 5/16" O.D. in a .029" wall thickness having an I.D. of @ .254" .... this ideal because our 1/4" cables actually are @ .244/.246" diameter ;)

The K&S number is #9211

Have run this tubing on and off for years with ZERO issue ... actually because of it working so well, have in the past few years quit using the nylon liners all together.

Hi,
Thanks Scott, I have been using the 5/16" tubing for ages and used that little extra grease (wasn't really that much) to quieten the little rattle just a tad. I did not know about the thick walled tubing.
That will make it so much easier.
Again thanks.

Thanks Scott, the tighter tolerance sounds like the way to go.
I use Mercury 24C grease and also use WD40 to clean out tube and cable.
