saw build

imgoodatwhatido created the topic: saw build

HI everyone...my name is justin and im new to this forum. I have been into rc for a long time now but have always messed with cars. I got burnt out on them and now im lookin to start my first boat project. I have a few questions i hope some of you seasoned vets can help me with that will get me headed in the right direction I cant really see myself with a slower starter boat and im somewhat of a perfectionist and speed freak so i want somethin really nice and fast.

SO I have this really strong running 36cc husqvarna saw that i tore down completely and im about to take it to my buddies machine shop and start modding and re-threading the crankshaft so that the threads are clockwise since at the moment its left hand threaded. I think i will also use the stock clutch assembly but will also have to drill and re-thread it as well. and in the end i will have to make a clutch bell from scratch. Since i have a very nice Futaba pcm 3 channel radio already in my hands i might as well use the third channel to make a custom power trim.

To me the hydro and catamaran boats are the most appealing to the eye....seems like all the hydro hulls are a bit more pricey than the cats so i think i will build a cat. I found a hull i like but the only thing is that its 41" long...this engine i have should be a real powerhouse and i was wondering about some of you fellas opinions about putting a 36cc engine in a 41" boat. I know that the engine placement on the cats seems to be farther back than most other boats and i was wondering how much this can affect my hull choice.

I was also wondering if anyone knows the stock weight of a complete zenoah ?

thanks for your help in advance

First, Welcome to the MGB forums :woohoo:

Sounds like a fun project having someone to fabricate or machine parts as needed for boat use. As a learning curve being new into boats, see the project as quite a challenge so you should learn a lot !

I will add however with the big torque saw engines produce, your going to need BIG props that will be costly. Boats ultimate handling will be less because of the big props ... so, what you end up with $$ wise invested in props likely won't have a use if you ever go mainstream using more typical marine engines.
More typical ... is lower torque but much higher rpm engines that just work so much better in our RC boats ;)

A Zenoah G260 or an RCMK S254 with mounts and a pipe weigh @ 5 - 5 1/2#'s give or take.
36cc's in a 41" hull :silly: ... wild ride most likely.

** As you work it out, please share it.

Scott

I am all ears...i did think about the larger prop in comparison to the engine size.
I had no idea the prop size would alter the boats handling. but now that i think of it it makes sense due to the drag it creates when off throttle. Tell me that i will be better off with a stock zenoah and thats the route i will take. Then maybe later i can use this big boy for a very stupidly fast drag boat :woohoo:

Of course if you are thinking a cat the higher torque chainsaw type engines can be run through a splitter box then out the back to 2 smaller props!
Just a thought!
I sold my 41 inch mono to a friend who has had cars forever, he returned for repairs after every run!

Awwwww! Your little engine is sooooo cute!

i did think of that but i dont know if i want to get that in depth with it...designing a gear box will take some real hours. i looked up the specs on this engine and it is 2 hp and 13000 max rpm's.

We currently hold the NAMBA GX2 SAW record. There is an article on the engine development program here:
www.modelgasboats.com/Magazine..._Record_Engine/

We used an outrigger hydroplane to go 105 mph. Testing the same engine in an Aeromarine Cyclone cat got into the high 70 mph area. Both speeds can be improved on, but it will take a custom prop or a gear up drive to get much over 100 mph.

Better yet a stock RCMK S254EVO makes a tad over 5 hp at @ 16,000 rpm. A few mods can produce near 6 hp at 18,000. A stock engine and mounts is a tad over $300
