Gearboxes?

Ozpulse created the topic: Gearboxes?

I know that there are overdrive units etc available for our RC boats!
What I was wondering was if a 2stage box similar to what the rc drag car guys use could be made for our boats?
Hitting top speed at 1:1 with your boat and then having the overdrive kick in would be an awesome sight especially with riggers etc. :woohoo:
Probably more suited to straightline SAW style boats!
Torque on the prop at this time would be minimal as the boat is already at full speed/rpm ! As long as the overdrive wasnt high enough to bring the engine rpm down off the pipe there is no reason it wouldnt keep accelerating. B)
Sort of a 2stage powerglide box for rc boats!

Awwwww! Your little engine is sooooo cute!

Funny because I will bet almost if not all members here are members there....

You have to take everything with a grain of salt, there's a reason everyone uses sirton brands of hardware, its because we have been there done that, wasted money, spent money twice on stuff that if we would have got the right stuff first it would have been soooo much easier & funner. plus it's a place built on personal experience, & opinions based on those experiences. and when you ask a question everyone will give you their 2 cents, so don't take it personally if you do, well you just wont have much fun...

I've been juggling this idea in my head for about 3 years now! I guess I'm not the only one! lol I have an idea that I think would work for this, but have never gotten around to try it yet. Just never enough time in a day. If you decide to progress with this please keep us posted. I'm very interested. In my opinion, it most definitely can and will work as long as the transition is smooth enough and as you say, that you do not choke the engine with the shift.

Oz...Your thought process scares me B) I was thinking the same thing the other day. I even pulled out my modified 6 wheel drive pulling truck to look at how hard it would be to incorporate it :S Piece of cake!!! It,s a modded aluminum housing with all hardened steel gears, I know it would up, I pulled up to 70 pounds with this truck on a scale sled that moves the weight to the front just like the real deal!!! And seeing how I'm not the only one out there thinking like that... I'll try it and let ya know!!!

This is what I'm pulling the tranny out of... It even has reverse!!!! B)

Thanks Marc, it does, but i seldom use... I just go over what's in my way :woohoo: I've done a lot of mods to it, so I know it would hold up. The shift point is even adjustable, you can wind it out completely so there's no load before it will shift, or it can be set to shift right after you hammer on it!!! B)

Mark,
New to your site. I have working 2 speed gear box,s,with a adjustable shift that you can set, 6 different ratios along with 2 cases.I have single set housings as well as quick change gear-set that don,t require removing the box from the boat, also a three change set up that is done by rotating a disc in the housing. Ive been developing these systems for three years.I have a W twin drive also light weight mes 1.5 w x 3/4 d x2.0 h. the housings are for v monos and flat bottoms. Presently have out-drive / strut Rutter in the works. All are CNC machined. All designs and are patent pending.

I would be glad to show and answer any question you guys have
