Gearboxes?

Woodie replied the topic: Re:Gearboxes?

I simply don't believe in the concept of a 2-shift gear in a boat. No Sir!
If this really worked, we would se lots of boats with gears like in cars, and we don't.
The same goes for aeroplanes.
In my opinion it is obvious: Shifting the gear when in speed will lower the rpm's and then again the speed, unless you jump onboard and change the propeller simultanious.
Contradict me if you can. :)

Contradict you?

Ya pretty simple
prop it for the rpm of the top gear ---- same as would gear any sprint car with a in out box -- gear it for track

or in this case prop it for the second gear ---- stick it behind a 29cc or 35QD and no problems use Futaba 2.4 (I do) and there is your gear change

It's more in line with a SAW type boat and I'll definely give it a try

My fathers boss had a V8 boat with a 2 speed powerglide feeding into the v'drive!
It really went well till he ran it up the Murray River bank one year!

Good to hear someone is willing to give it a go!
In SAW applications every extra MPH counts! ;)
Hope your not putting it in the mono you run, it has a hard enough time staying on the water now!

Awwwww! Your little engine is sooooo cute!

Two speed gear box's in boats are usefull in some applications. High performance props often have lots of pitch, diameter, rake, and cupping.A lower gear can be used to get the boat on plane and let the engine spool up then shifted into the "normal" gear ratio that is able turn these props at speed. Should work well on large boats.

The boxes can be built with up to 15 different ratios and gear combos, that will fit into the same case measurements. I rate the ratios in RPM percent increases, it starts at 7% up to 42% the most popular range is 25,27,32 and 36 percent.
The cost is tough right now. Machine shops only talk if you order a 100 or more units at a time, and I have 4 styles and hull types.I'm waiting for a quote for single units. As it stands the boxes come in around $180 and the 2speeds about $225. They are adjustable to shift any rpm you need. To be get better handle on the price. I need to know what type and style your looking for. Understand I've spent 3 years developing this interchangeable gear system so you don't have to buy a hole new unite to change your setup .Each setup produces 3 to 4 different ratios and as I said earlier thies 4 different combos.

I hope this photo can give you an idea of whats avalable to work with and you can email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with any ? you might have on mounting or setups.

Woodie replied the topic: Re:Gearboxes?

OK. I admit this is worth considering.

But I have questions as: Should the gear be controlled by remote set to an extra servo on an additional channel - or will it work automatic at some rpm? Like some kind of clutch? How many rpm's and hp's can the gears manage?

Even more important: How about some links to on-line shops? Some specifications? Some prices? In my case in the EU? Nothing can be sold without marketing, that tells you excactly what you get for your $$.

Or did I miss something in this debate?

(2-Speed: I see you do your best, and I respect this).
