Questions you would like answered in a new article about getting started in model boats.

Rockett kit was just what I'm doing this winter with a couple older retired carpenter guys that like my little boats. LOL

I do a weedie or two every year (Vern Kilmer gives me hulls for 100.00 blems) and I get engines from Sears or Princess Auto new for 50.00 throw in a bit of used hardware and a JR Fm kit for 80.00 cable from weed eater 5.00 and make the rest and ....

less than 4 bills I have some one else addicted ....... I have done this almost every year for a while - I make them 'put it together' so they unster stand how it works

This year a couple of guys want to build ""the little toy boat"" from wood )carpenter's geeze) and I have a new Craftman weed eater sittin' just a waitin

Hence the Rockett .............

But if I can help I'm in ....

Not much I can do to help from over here!
Glad that I may have sparked some interest with you guys though! ;)
I think there is even a sence of nostalgia about it.
Being the starter engine for a lot people who have since moved on.

Awwwww! Your little engine is sooooo cute!

It would be more fun for a weekend warrior to take up the challenge with input from Carlo and/or myself with others welcome to contribute as well.
I don't want to come across as a killjoy or negative in encouraging such project but, If we look back say ... 15 years or more removing the compact case Zemoah PU series engines from this equation leaving NOTHING but weedeater/blower/saw motors, we can better focus on what YOU the budget r/c boater has to work with. Newer offerings in current engines will be equal too or alike enough be in the mix as well.

Intended application of original engines one might choose plays a HUGE part so durability, RPM limits electrically governed or limited because of little to no meat cast into cylinder limiting breathing, or just cast so thin there is nothing than can be removed attempting porting work.
When we find an engine that allows some tinkering we then have our guinea pig :woohoo:

Being in the field commercially working on Chainsaws, Lawn Garden 2 strokes for over 30 years, tuning and tweaking looking for ways in extracting more power from per-say "It's all I had for an engine" ... have been there and done that.

My ability and willingness to mentor exceeds that of actually getting hands on involved doing such work any longer. So if anyone wants to dive into the fox hole and see just how deep it go's, We at MGB and our contributors will be more than willing to help you educate yourself further.

Hi everyone. Great idea Carlo. Maybe one idea would be to explain all of the terms and uses that our radio's have, especially the computer ones. I still have not figured out all of the stuff on my JR computer radio. End point etc. Just a thought.

Regards

Tar :)

I think it's a great idea Carlo. I've been at it for 10 years and I still don't know everything I don't know.

I can make great hardware, but my set ups suck.

Hey Tar, Carlo has already done the radio article....it pretty much covers everything we need to set on our radios...the rest of the functions on today's 2-3 channel radios are mostly for RC cars. Here is a link to the article. www.modelgasboats.com/Magazine..._Up_Your_Radio/

I do have questions on hardware set up for hydroplanes
I've been told the further the prop is behind the transom
the boat thinks it's after plane is longer
Is this an advantage?
What about the style and placement of the rudder?
Same for turn fin and why isn't it called a skid fin?
Perhaps these questions are answered else where?
Thanks Tap

Prop distance from transom differs pending hull type, prop lift in use and rudder position relative to it.

Skid fin would be correct but when hull in question is more racing biased a Turn fin or in reality "PIVOT FIN" is more the case.
Ideally a hydro with turn fin should pivot on fin once the YAW is introduced with rudder deflection. Hull design, amount of non trip chine, weight and general design somewhat dictate just how hard fin can be allowed to dig in having boat pivot around it ?

Actually the dynamics involved have not been shared in depth on MGB or other sites on the web, likely because so much of it is physics based having MANY contributing factors making each a case by case issue in what hull requires or has wrong.
