Propeller experimentation, your advice sought please.

Craig Dickson created the topic: Propeller experimentation, your advice sought please.

Hi Folks

My 47” Lynx mono (similar to the Delta Force) currently runs well on a sharp balanced Octura X470 prop. 2.76” diameter and 3.86” pitch. My engine is a stock Zen 260PUM.

I am tempted to try the Prather S270 prop which has 2.74” diameter and 4.2” pitch. I understand that the Prather prop (size for size) has 20% less blade area and greater slip.

Have you used the Prather props and if so how do you rate them compared to the Octura props?

Do you think my stock Zen would pull the higher pitch Prather S270?

Your comments/advice and shared experience will be very much appreciated.

Cheers
Craig

I used to run a Prop Shop 7015/2 on my Insane mono with a stock Zenoah. Seemed to work well for me.

You need Will (Ineedspots) to chime in as he does a LOT of prop work

if the boat likes a X470...i would move to a X472 or a X670. The Prathers are ok, but you'd probably be going backwards as far as performance without doing mods to the prop to make it more efficient.

Stock Zenoah 260's can actually pull a good amount of pitch. They wont pull it a bunch of RPM, but thats not where they make their power anyway. I had a Insane mono run over 50mph stock pulling a ABC MW3 prop.

In all the years running Gas R/C boats having used Octura and Prather props, nothing within both the aforementioned offerings equal what we now have from ABC, Propshop and VooDoo for performance tuning.

Thanks very much for taking time to offer your advice guys.

In the UK my source of prop makes is quite limited. Octuras are readily available.
In view of what has been said about the Prathers (and as I’d have to pay about $50 (£30) to try one) I think for the time being I’ll experiment with the Octura options.

ABC was mentioned positively twice so I will be searching the web for suppliers etc.

In respect of tuning/reworking, my current experience is limited to doing a good job of balancing and sharpening so I am ideally looking for the best “out of the box” prop.

Cheers

best out of the box to me are VooDoo and ABC - find them way easier to do then Octura or Prather

Thanks for your further contribution and the links CHR.

VooDoo and ABC seem to be coming out as winners.

For the most part what VooDoo offers is domestic manufactured versions of what PropShop UK manufactures. Tho his SS offerings are much tougher than the Propshop SS offerings.
