Good you got her back! Put some pool noodles or pipe insulation in the rear so it will sit level when full of water.

Hi Daz

My Lynx Gas boat has done the same thing recently when over stretching its limits.

That Dorsal Fin is not a nice thing to see even if you’ve got a rescue boat at hand for speedy revovery!

I put pipe insulation foam in the rear and side sections of my boat but it was not sufficient to prevent the back end from going deep! I need to re-think that for the next run. I wish I had applied expanding foam in the back and side sections of my hull (as opposed to just the front section). In the absence of doing that I might use some big bubble, bubble film in the sides.

The critical positive aspect of your posting is the fact that your boat did NOT sink. It remained visible and recoverable.

Question:

Did your radio compartment upon recovery remain totally dry?

I do hope so.

If ever there is the ultimate test of radio box waterproofing, your experience delivers that test.

Regards
Craig

Hi all of you.

The orginal topic inspired me to upload this video clip of my boat when it ended up the same way.....

Thankfully after recovery my radio box was bone dry and the gas engine fired up after a couple of pulls of the cord for the next run...

Alright Craig no i was,nt as lucky as you my electrics were soaked,i,ve got home stripped everything as it was all dead, got all water out and then put all electrics while dismantled in oven on low for 30 mins, all ok apart from one servo so been lucky really. The boat had no floatation in at all so will now ask whats the best stuff to use cos im not using the gas boat without floatation fitted to the hull, glad it was only the small boat of mine.I note Mercury94 and yourself mention pipe lagging,i did,nt realise it was suitable but may give it a try unless anyone can suggest anything better.regards Darren

Personally I think that the bigger issue here is to make sure that your radio box is waterproof and not just splash proof.

Once confident that it is fully waterproof then one should focus upon ensuring a decent level of buoyancy in the event of a flip over. Ideally both issues should be sorted before first run.

Get the first point sorted... and even a flip over of the boat is not an event that stops future running after boat recovery.

Well I found out that my flatbottom floats today!
First turn a bit too hard and barrel rolled it!
Sat upside down for around 30 mins before I got it back. :(
A bit of water in the radio box but didnt seem to soak anything all seems to be well after spraying etc.
Note too self 'turn rudder travel down'

Awwwww! Your little engine is sooooo cute!

I use a bog standard plastic box. However the brass angled rails are permanently bolted and epoxied to the outside. Four bolts go into alloy studs (glassed into the hull) to hold the box in place making for quick and easy removal.

The only potential water entry points are:
1) Hatch foam/perspex lid.
2) Two bellows for throttle & rudder rods.
3) Entry point of rod that operates radio switch (minimal risk).
