boat with changes done

dazzido created the topic: boat with changes done

Hi all changed rudder bracket angle so it is now inline with strut set at 0%,did,nt have aluminium to make wedge so did it with ply sealed with resin, gonna try slight angle change on strut next run & rudder kicked back but only one change at a time.my fuel tank is mounted at front of boat and is heavy containing just short of 1 gallon of fuel so am going to fit two 1 litre gas bags fitted either side of engine.see how it goes anyway, any ideas then let me know.thanks all Darren :)

Wow! You really carry that much fuel? That does add a huge amount of weight. I use a 12oz tank and rarely use all of that. The boat looks like it's running pretty well. What prop are you using and is the strut set parallel to the bottom of the boat? It looks like you have a pretty tall roostertail which means you may not be getting as much forward push from the prop as you might like.

Hi dwr9 yes thats how much fuel its carrying in its large aluminium tank which is why i need to change it.you say 12oz how much is that in litres?the prop originally was a x478 but got chipped so me not throwing much away trimmed it down on both sides making it about 71-72mm im considering trying an octura x470 or x670 so have you any experience with these? my strut is set perfectly inline with the bottom of the boat using a board as suggested by Marc so yes thats ok so my guess is its that amount of fuel so will try running it nearly empty until i get my gas bags set up.Thanks for your comments anyway, regards Darren :)

12 ounces is about .35 liters. I have had the best luck with a 3014 or 6717/3 prop. Doug

Doug gonna try small weedwacker fuel tank i have see how it performs then, did try a cheap chinese 6717/3 prop once but all the boat did was scream, the prop from the leading edge was 20mm to rear of blade and it looked to hardly have any pitch at all.will try one from Prestwich here in the UK then will report back, thanks for your advise anyway cheers!

Dazz the weight of the the fuel can cause the turning problems you described from one of your previous posts. Lighter weight = better handling and speed.

I agree. Too much weight in the wrong place can cause problems. But this also goes for too little weight in places where it's actually needed. In my case I really consider stabilizing my upcoming mono with some lead blocks - probably around the aft part of the keel.
Then again: My boat will be running offshore in rough waters. Other boats running on flat freshwater may not need this consideration.
Just remember that a little extra weight is not allways bad - depending on your needs, and where you place it.

Cheers! :cheer:

Thanks Mercury94 & Woodie the fuel is more than likely the cause of my problems, today im going to whip that tank out and put a much smaller one on from a weedwacker which holds about 500-600ml & also fit a shaft oiler using a old Nitro fuel tank i have,at the moment i,ve been pumping grease in through the nipple above my flex shaft top bearing but due to the screw effect of the cable i,ve had to keep greasing twice maybe more each day,at least with the oiler it will be automatic :woohoo: & give me one less thing to worry about.See how it all goes then i will report back with the results.Cheers guys :)

Hi Daz

It is good to see your continued enthusiasm and development of your boat.

I’d just like to pick up on the business of flexi shaft lubrication:

There seems to be those that love oilers and those that hate them preferring grease.

Personally I use grease. I am surprised that your set up is running dry so often. I use Quicksilver 2-4-C Marine (with Teflon) and although reasonably thick in consistency it has worked well for me with no instances of a dry flex following decent running time.

I wonder whether your stuffing tube to strut support is sufficiently snugly fitted together to avoid lubricant leakage.

If that is okay I wonder if you have too much play in your strut support bearings allowing excessive lubricant leakage.

Personally I’d check these two aspects before ditching the grease system because if they are a concern you might find that an alternative oiler dumps quite a lot of oil into your lake and empties rather quickly.

One aspect of the grease option that I like is that you have to (or definitely should) remove the flexi for re-greasing before each new day of running. In my opinion that habit forces the beneficial habit of regular inspections of the components at the same time.

Craig
