Prop Balancing/ Resharpening

BrandonC created the topic: Prop Balancing/ Resharpening

Hi Guys,

Today I took the prop of my boat and low and behold I damaged it :pinch: ...pics below.

I read all the Prop articles in the Resources section...anyone have any other info which might be useful or is that all that's needed. First time I've done this and don't want to mess up a brand new prop!!!

That close into the hub your in the part of the blade that really won't care/know the damage is present. Just lightly file dress off the damage from the backside leaving leading edge alone, check and adjust balance if required and just run it !

Hey Brandon..with that chip missing out of it, don't worry too much about messing up a new prop, whatever you hit already took care of that part!!! You just have to get a good balancer so once ya did the work Scott said, just true it up by taking a little off the other blades..(if needed) and you'll be right back in business. ;) The first prop I shsrpened and balanced, I was a nervous wreck... 2 hours later, I found out it wasn't that hard, and had a prop that worked alot better after I was finished.

Good Luck, and let us know how it turns out!!!

Right all done. There's still a little damage where it was damaged initially but I didn't want to go filing away too much especially as Scott said its not in that much of an important place.

I gave the leading edges a spruce up because the sharpening job which was done by the guy I bought it off was a little inconsistent. Then I gave it a rub with 600,800 and finally 1200 wet papers to make it nice and purdy! All in all a success!

Thanks guys. Also thanks to Marc for putting the article on balancing and sharpening in the resources section..it was very helpful.

One quick question....I have two props, one is a two blade and the three blade above. The two blade weighs 15g whist the three blade weighs 33g. I haven't seen any reference to weight affecting performance but does it? I would expect a higher inertia from the three blade as its heavier or does this matter?

All the best,

Brandon.

A ding there won't hurt a thing since that part of the prop is usually out of the water.

The only part of the prop that actually works is about the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the blade.

If you think I am joking, take some Dykem, paint the blades, run the boat for half an hour and see how much of the Dykem is gone when you bring the boat back to the beach.

The static weight difference has no effect on performance .... the extra blade however does ;)
