Rcmk K30 pistons

adian_ges created the topic: Rcmk K30 pistons

I am just wondering if anyone has had any problems with the piston ring locating pin on the new K30 pistons.
I have had 4 (four) piston ring locating pins break on me in 24 hours.
When I compare it to the Zenoah piston the pin looks of a different material and is smaller. Can anyone comment on this.

Here we go again :S .... know nothing on the k30's, but ring index pins have been an issue before.

Contact your local distributor and demand FREE replacements or go too the RCMK factory direct with your issues.

I contacted the Distributor and they offered to replace one of my damaged cylinders, That was Ok , but it does nothing for the reliability of the piston.
One pin broke as I started the engine.

Not sure about skirt length ? ( Rcmk a tad longer ) ... but the 36MM Zenoah piston may work as well.

Just tossing it out there

I have been using the Zenoah pistons before but the squish clearance was too large with the +1mm crank, using this piston increase performance drastically as you can get the correct squish without allowing exhaust pressure into the crankcase.

Find it odd that you've lost four pistons. I've been watching Jim's and talking to people running K-30 engines I have not heard of this. Do you have pictures of the failures?

I two find it odd that u have had problems with 4 pistons pins. Maybe this could be another problem that isn't directly on the surface for u yet.
Maybe engine breakin
Maybe prop needs ajusting
Shaft complications
A really bad string of luck

Maybe your application is pushing engine to limit and the pin is the first weak point, maybe try to fab a pin out of a stronger material...titanium?...

Just to toss it out ????

An issue that "Can" exist breaking ring index pins can happen most typically when the exhaust port gets modified and EITHER by virtue of a flat profile port roof ... Or, a non symmetrical shape of the port.
*A flat roof causes ring snagging/clipping as ring gets slammed back into its groove from it being out slightly as it pass's over the large area of the open port.
* A port shape not symmetrical walks the ring side to side every time it pass's up and down within the port opening.

** Both these will impact the rings end gap against the index pin damaging in time both the ring and index pin.

Just an FYI ....
