Do I trust too many people?

Steve Seebold created the topic: Do I trust too many people?

About 4 years ago, someone on this site was looking for a clutch and a water pump. I had one of each that I no longer needed so I sold them for $40.00. I sent them out and told the fellow on the other end to just send me a check when he got them.

I never heard another word from him.

A few months ago, I made some special parts for someone and did the same thing because I was hoping to do some more business with him. I sent the parts out on January 12, 2012. 46 days days later, I sent an e-mail stating that it had been 46 days since I had shipped the parts, I knew he had them because he had posted pictures in this site, and I was almost called a liar when I asked to be paid for the parts. Every time I sent an e-mail, I was told "oh yeah, I'll get a check out when my wife gets home, or I'll get a pay-pal out when my son gets home. I eventually got paid, but 46 days later.

Then like a dummy, I did it again a couple of weeks ago. I sent a couple of parts that someone wanted. I didn't get them out for a few days, so since it was my fault, I sent an extra part for free. Now, the man won't even answer when I try to send him a PM.

You'd think I would have learned after the first time, but I guess I just put too much trust in other people.

Guys in US think everything is as fast as theirs - I have had 2 small parts from Calif take 23 days

If you got paid in end - what's your point ? If you didn't get paid then ya maybe depends on time involved

I don't sweat little stuff - nor would I post things about stuff I was paid for - Drama is for the little girls

After all - we all remember Woody's rails - what they say about "people in glasss houses throwing stones "

Enough said

7 weeks to get a $5 servo mount and you posted this !!
That is what I call fast service glad I was not in a hurry

sorry if you went broke over that $7.42 cents .
my payment would have been that day about 7 weeks ago if you would have gave a pay pal addy, like you said letting me know it was going to be late or even being sent out in a email or PM would have been nice but I guess that is different then letting you know it got here and not letting you know about it .
Delt with you 2 times my 1st and last time

But Woody got his engine rails. I think Woody understood that I was learning a new machine and I wanted his rails to be perfect. My rule is "if I won't run it in my boat, I won't try to sell it to you.

I didn't mention any names in my post, but an e-mail letting me know the package(s) had arrived would have been a nice touch. All I ask when I ship a product is that I be paid in a timely manner.

If you sent me money and I sent product the same way I get paid, everyone would be on me like white on rice.

I make parts. I don't do it for a living. We all know that if I did it for a living, I would have gone broke a long time ago. I do it for something to do, to keep myself busy. I'm supposed to be retired, but retirement didn't work for me.

I make parts, but I refuse to make a part that exactly like a part that someone else makes. And I refuse to skimp on quality. I will make a part similar to what someone else makes, but not exactly the same. I make parts for racers and sport boaters alike.

If you want a particular part and no one makes it, give me a chance. Tell me what you're looking for and I'll bet I can make it.

I'll make the same deal with model boaters that I make with the R/C car guys. If you have a product that I can make and make some money on, then your part is free.

Hi Steve

Thought provoking topic!

Firstly for my contribution I will not comment upon any individual situations as that is non of my business.

My personal opinion is that if selling products to people that you don’t know personally, you should only despatch upon receipt of payment and make that clear at the onset. That way everything is easier and both parties know the score.

However it is of course vital that communications are exchanged promptly at all stages of the transaction and from both parties. That way expectations can be made clear and accommodated without frustration and disappointment that otherwise will often result.

If you are supplying products even if not as a full time business, I believe that you should treat the process the same way as if you were doing it for a full time living.

It is not for me to answer your question, “Do I trust too many people?” Being naturally trustworthy of people is a good quality in my opinion.

However, when where money is involved I think you need to reassess the basis upon which you supply the quality bespoke parts that you invest time and money in making.

Cheers
Craig

Mark, check back through your e-mails. You never sent me anything asking for my paypal info.

I was late getting the servo mount off to you so I sent an extra one for free. If you look at the original reply here on MGB, I told you to just send me a check when you get the part. Had you told me you don't send checks, I would have given you my paypal info.

If you look at the replies, I asked if you had received the parts, and I never got a reply. I'm sorry you feel the way you do, and that you don't want to deal with me again, but this could have all been avoided had we just had a little more communication between us. If you had sent me your e-mail address, I would have communicated that way and none of this would have happened.

Sorry,

Steve

Hi Steve,
Keep the faith! Most of us have run across this type of person more than once in a life time. His loss more than he'll ever know that is how I look at it.
