OUTDRIVES; STINGERS; RUDDERS... oh my

smokeater2005 created the topic: OUTDRIVES; STINGERS; RUDDERS... oh my

OK, so after much debate and reading on my part i have to pole those that i hope have much more knowledge than I...

I want to buy hardware for my 54" bonzisports deep vee fountain hull. So what is better for a single cylinder RCMK k30 side exhaust engine setup? I have heard good and bad things about every type of setup out there...
options...

1. strut with inline rudder

2. stinger with inline rudder

3. 1. or 2. with rudder offset to the right(from behind)

So without breaking the bank, what would be the most reliable (higher speed 40-55mph) setup?

Also is there a higher torque servo for use in steering that doesn't cost 100.00 US$ ? Should i double up on smaller servos or drop the bill on a crazy standard size servo that meets the general tourque numbers that most people say is what should be used for a servo in turning an rc boat?

im trying not to be to technical with the question(s) so as to not limit the responces i get, but please be as technical in the responces as you wish...

While many R/C gas boats have been steered effectively using a
standard size high torque servo, many boaters are of the opinion
"only a 1/4 scale servo should be used to steer a 1/4 scale gas
boat".

There is a recent thread over on Jim's R/C Boat Dock where a lot
of valuable opinions about the sizes and types of servos were
expressed. The thread is named "servos - (for steering)".

Thanks whitefish for the link on servo 411... i found one i can use that fits all needs for 59$...

Now i just need to figure out what kind of hardware to run outback...

It seems to me, that it is so up to the opinion of the builder and less rooted in factual clasification that it becomes hard for one to choose a strut with inline rudder over a stinger with side rudder based on application and performance...
yes a side rudder makes more since to me for circle/oval racing as it would "bite" more when placed on the inside of the turn, thats just basic geometry. So if im looking more for a badass<--technical term, boat that i want to be fast yet not full out race setup... would then an inline strut/rudder or inline stinger/rudder be a better option... the only basic difference is that one is attached to the hull and the other has a threw hull cable attachment... allthings being equal would an inline stinger/rudder be better if not for just the less potential for water into the hull, and clean installation???? any and all ideas and opinions are very welcome...

I have tried several times to log on to Jim's R/C Boat Clique, but after I had a dispute with Dom 5 or 6 years ago, I was banned.

When they ban you, they block/ban your IP address.

Racers prefer (most have to have) the rudder placed on the right (centered with the right rail, usually). I havent had an inline setup for a long time, it will allow you to make right and left hand turns (watch those lefts, could cause problems!), but in my opinion, the boat will track and turn better (albeit right hand only) offset to the right.

wow steve now thats a serious block. for that you would have to have a reason for an ip address change... like telling your internet provider that you are having problems with hackers and want a new ip address. Or ghost ip address software <----illegal, or get a new wireless router and or modem and when u install it with support over the phone from your ip provider they usualy give u a new number cause its easyer than editing the old ip address association with your hardware... now if they have banned your mac address (of which all computers have pc or mac) then your screwed without getting a new pc...

if u have a smart phone your ip on that would be different... use diff email though...

Or install another NIC in the computer which carries its own MAC address. Depending on your provider they could block a range assigned to them, but that would also keep innocent people from using the site from the same area. All depends on how Steve gets his IP from his ISP.

If I really feel the need to get back on, I'll go buy an iPad. It would be fun to get back on their clique just to see what's going on, even if I don't post.
