IV-bag vs hot engine?

woody created the topic: IV-bag vs hot engine?

As some of you may know, the 56" Cigarette mono, that I (still) am building, demands a very tight packing of all internal parts.
I expect to use a solid 1 litre tank for the petrol, but some wize guy has told me that an IV-bag is easier to use, and he even tells me, that a (plastic) IV-bag will not burst and catch fire if it gets in contact with a glowing hot engine cylinder - just because it only contains fluid (highly flammable petrol, that is!) and has absolutely no air inside(!) :S
It does'nt sound recommendable, but is this really true?
Anyone with not theoretical experience about this (explosive) question?

Cheers! :cheer:

woody lots guys run fuel bags under the front of motor - but it only makes sense that anything plastic touching heat will melt - plastic bag or plastic tank.

I run both depends on boat - however neither tank is allowed to 'move around' so they don't touch hot motor parts.

I only had one run with Razor before winter came and they were cut short by a split fuel line. The boat was filled with a lot of fuel but open top it was fine.

I have had several boats now with split lines or tanks etc and lots of fuel - not one boom yet.

The only fuel bags I run are Bucks bags as:
1. they are designed for boats and gasoline
2. not some used IV bag that had god knows what in it
3. hold up better

Just my two cents ....... glad the project continues

If design dictates fuel bag to be that close to hot engine ?
Buffer the contact by adding some Glued on thin rubber/ leather / or like material that will prevent melting and / or scuffing.

Thanks guys.

My son (the machine engineer U know) once told me about this: If you have a simple plastic bag filled with some liquid (of ANY kind), the bag will not burst in close contact with something really hot - that is as long as there is liquid in the bag. No air allowed on either side of the plastic.
So IN THEORY you should be able to pack a gasoline filled IV-bag around a red-hot exhaust, just as a cooler (!)

Yeah! Sounds too frightening I know, so I lay down my case with the only advice:

BOYS & GIRLS: DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME! :pinch:

To be safe myself, I think that I will stay with my more complicated but less dangerous solid tank placed about one inch in front of the engine.

To Scott: My boat is my own design, so I do everything from scratch, no dictated design, having no idea about anything technichal - except how to build a beautiful wooden hull.
This I can do. :)

Cheers! :cheer:
