Request For Subscriber Blocking (Ignore Option)

whitefish created the topic: Request For Subscriber Blocking (Ignore Option)

Admins:

Is there any way this forum can have the Ignore Subscriber option made
available?

Some of the recent traffic is absolutely uncalled for and unwarranted.

If no means is provided to allow each subscriber to choose who they are
willing to view posts from then I fear the quality here is going to
continue to degrade and I for one do not want to see MGB suffer any
more loss of content than it already has.

Some of us are making our best efforts to create content here but there
is only so much that can be accomplished when certain subscribers are
allowed the freedom to address whoever they choose regardless of how
insulting their comments may be.

Thanks for your consideration.

I have never seen this function made available on a forum before. I have only seen it on chats and such. I agree sometimes it would be a nice function to have, but I fear the only option we have is to filter out bad apples manually. If you feel some users' posts are inappropriate you can always contact an admin and report it. In the meantime, we will continue to do our best to moderate as fairly as possible.

Vbulletin like you know who has this feature. I have a bunch of clowns on ignore
I agree with whitefish the "high pressure sales under the guise of helpful posts" are out of line.

I will do a bit of research then, to see if it's available on our setup. I didn't even know we could do that on Vbulletin... I guess I just like reading the crap sometimes! ha ha!

vBulletin is the one. A supported Forum App with continuing development and
reasonable price plus discount for annual renewal. RC Discuss is also running
on vBulletin as well as RC Tech, RC Large Scale and RC Crawler so it does
appear to be one of the most popular.

One other forum that does offer an Ignore feature is RC Groups.com but
that forum app is not identified and could be proprietary software.

There is one freeware app (Open Source BB Software) called phpBB Creating
Communities (RC Model Reviews runs on it) that includes an Ignore feature.

www.phpbb.com/

AFAICT, Simple Machines forum app does have an Ignore feature.

Admins don't have the luxury of getting to Ignore. Somebody must "mind the
playpen" and audit the B.S. and temper tantrums. Subscribers should not have
to do this. When subscribers are using the Ignore feature, there is a clear
reduction in work load for the Admins as the forum becomes somewhat self
monitoring.

What about changing to paid subscriptions?

I would gladly be a "pay for" subscriber of MGB if it changed to vBulletin
or any app with an Ignore feature.

A few will shape up on a "pay for" forum as loss of access can still happen
and there are absolutely no refunds. Paying for a subscription does not give
a subscriber the right to break the rules - they must do it at the risk of
loosing their subscription and their money. Yes, they can sneak back in under
a different ISP but most of the time their "attitude" usually improves.

Gets rid of the trolls too. Having to run them down always wastes some time
for the Admins and it has to be nice not having them continue to appear.

It is something to consider. I bet it would turn MGB into a "World Class" R/C
boat forum. MGB has built a valuable library (that could be massaged a little)
- why not get some supportive return for it by changing to a paid subscription
system?

MGB was a paid for service at one point in time, it didn't help.
VBulletin is about 150 annually for the license and then it needs to be hosted.

One thing to consider is the people you consider to be trolls may only be people that don't agree with your point of view.Unless they are obvious in their actions you can hardly expect the administation to do anything with them and others may not find their point of view objectionable.

Bob:

Thanks for your opinions.

I'm certain I can do OK with just an Ignore feature - whatever it takes to get
it is the only question for me so I was just demonstrating my willingness to go
paid subscriptions if it has to be.

The trolls I'm referring to are the subscribers selling stuff and hawking their
web sites that are unrelated to RC gas boats. Naturally, paid subscriptions
*always* cuts down on trolling a lot - the type I'm referring to anyway. I have
other names for subscribers that don't know how to behave like an adult.

I looked into it and the ignore function is not yet available with the forum software we are using. It is However on the list for future upgrade so we should have it eventually. As for paid subscriptions, I don't really want to go that route.

Certainly something to look forward to here. Thank you for checking into it.

They aren't subscribers, they are advertisers. The help pay for this place.A change in bulletin board software won't make a difference.
