Rudder Placement to center offset strut

triplef created the topic: Rudder Placement to center offset strut

I am in the process of putting together an Insane Gen 4 Hydro.
The mounting bracket for the prop strut is offset 1.5 degrees to the I believe the right. I believe the reason for this is because the turn fin and rudder are installed to the right of the strut.

I believe the rudder can be or should be installed to the left of the prop strut. I believe this will straighten out the prop strut and with the rudder horn on the right the servo linkage would pull the rudder in stead of pushing it.
I believe a lot.
Please let me know if my beliefs are worth wile or not.
Thanks

The Insane Boats site should have some setup help on the site. I think that you mean 1-1/2", not degrees. Normal offset is 2-1/2".
Whether or not the rudder should be on the left or right also depends on what the manufacturer recommends. The theory for a rudder on the left is that it equalizes the drag of the rurn fin.

The g-4 does use a 1 1/2° angled strut to the left. Then it is offset 1/8" to the right this puts the prop back on center.
Rudder is usually kept on the right on that hull.

Insane Gen IV “MOBSTER” Hydro Set Up Instructions

Important Dimensions:
-The engine placement is 28" from the transom to the center of the sparkplug.
-The servo tray will need to be mounted on the bottom of the radio box. The most common way is to glue a ¼” strip of hobby plywood to the bottom of the radio box and attach the bracket to the wood strip.
-10-16oz. fuel bladder is recommended for this build.
-The total overall weight of the "complete" boat should be between 16 ½ - 17 ½ lbs. for best results.

Hardware Installation:
-I recommend the G4 Insane Hardware Kit. It is a one piece hardware kit for the transom. (There is 1 ½ degrees built into the bracket that holds the strut, this helps the boat to not pull to the right.)
-Start installation by finding where the center of the transom is and then install the bracket where the strut is 1/8” to the right of the center of the transom. With the 1 ½ degree offset on the bracket, that will put the prop shaft in the center, which will help the boat track straight
-Placement of the rudder is on the right of the transom.
-The Insane G4 Dagger Turnfin is what is recommended on this build. (This is included in the G4 Hardware Kit) The turn fin is installed on the leading edge of the right sponson. The turn fin bracket needs to be mounted at 90 degrees and parallel with the bottom of the boat. The bracket should also be 3/16” up off the bottom of the sponson for best results.
-Mounting pipe bracket: There is a wood plate underneath the deck of the boat. This is where you can use wood screws to attach the pipe mount.

Blueprinting Sponson Ride pads:
-To blueprint ride pads on sponsons use a sanding block with 220 or 320 sand paper. Make sure ride pads are perfectly flat. Sand out any hook or bumps that maybe on the bottom of the ride pads. Sharpen inside edge and square off the heel for best results.
-The most critical part of the ride pad is from the heel forward about 6”.

Cowl Installation:
-Install tab in front of cowl. Cut a slot in the rear of the nose cone at the top to accommodate tab on front of cowl.
-On the back part of the cowl install cowl locks to secure the cowl.

Strut Adjustment:
-Use a flat board or flat surface to set strut. Start with the strut at 1 1/8" from the bottom of the boat to the bottom of the strut. Looking at the strut assembly from the side while on the setup board, make sure the strut is perfectly flat.

-To tighten the boat up, lower the strut. To loosen the boat, raise the strut higher. Raising the strut will make the boat faster, but less stable in rough water.
