Stuffing tube life span?

triplef created the topic: Stuffing tube life span?

I am still working on the same gen 4 hydro.
I want to know if anyone has a general idea of how long a stuffing tube may last.
I am going to install a use a k30RZ motor. I was going to run the stuffing tube from the T-bar through the prop strut. ending the stuffing tube about 0.25" from the drive dog.

I was original thinking of epoxying in an aluminum tube to the outside of the stuffing tube through the hull. I am having trouble finding a .31 id aluminum tube. I may check a local archery shop.

I am know thinking I should be able to put some car wax on the brass stuffing tube and epoxying it through the hull. I don't believe the wax will let the epoxy attach to the brass? I should be able to loosen up the t-bar fitting and slide the old stuffing tube out and a new one in.

Does anyone know if the epoxy will stand up to the vibration of the stuffing tube?
Am I looking at this all wrong?
Please let me know.
Thanks.

The life of a stuffing tube depends on how you take care of it. If there's no kinks in it and if the flex cable is kept well lubed it can last a long time.
Just use a size larger piece of brass tubing to make things easier. yes, you can epoxy it in place or use a silicone like Shoe-Goo. Afterwards put a little solder where the tubes meet to keep the main one from moving around.

Use the next size up 11/32 brass for the sleeve in the bottom.

It has to be able to slide in the hull so you can adjust the strut.

You shouldn't be using a T bar in that hydro. No reason to. Glass in the sleeve and slide your stuffing tube through it.

Since you are running the stuffing tube through the strut you must be planning a welded stub cable driveline instead of square drive so there is no need to fasten the stuffing tube to the sleeve. You do not want to it needs to slide when you adjust the strut. Locktite the stuffing tube in the strut so it can't move.

Stuffing tubes last a while unless you blow a shaft. It takes 10 minutes to throw a new one in. You very rarely wear one out if it is aligned properly. You should triple up the collet end with several layers of tube to prevent it from wallering out.

You can dent the tube by landing the hull into the retriever boat.. Had that happen before, especially when full of water.

Yes that can happen.

Many racers run double wall 5/16" sleeved over with 11/32" for that reason. Then 3/8" sleeve through bottom or single wall the stuffing tube through the bottom so you only need 11/32" through the hull still.
