Most of the Homlites even before our Hybrid series were equipped with the CA5000 carburetor, very similar in design to the WT257, only a better low-mid metering circuit and a internal acceleration pump. Most of the carbs used today are in similar nature with the needle adjustments closely mirrored.
General settings for a "Big Bore" carburetor are:
High Needle: 1,1/2 turn out to start
Low Needle: 1 to 1,1/4 turn out to start
So you guys know the word origin "Big Bore" by real definition was a word I chose to describe the WT257 back in 1984, when I first discovered this carburetor. It's initial use was from a 50cc engine (backpack blower), and after performing engine work to then the Mitsubishi 25CC engines, we needed a larger carburetor to match the engine modifications.
Since there was no such thing of Gasoline model boating outside of, then our fairly new company, it was very difficult to sell the new concept of a gas boat, not to mention an aftermarket part.
The Big Bore carburetor was actually our first aftermarket part. I had to flavor it up by providing name recognition. My secondary schooling for 2 years was in marketing, and there I had a great teacher, who was passionate to the cause, and I learned allot from him, ( whom I have contacted on Facebook a few months back to thank. ) Sometimes that needs to be done by many of us...
Back to the story... The fact that the carburetor opening on the WT257 was 0.501" compared to that of a stock 23cc carburetor at 0.375", provided me the differential for a name.
I was building and racing Formula Vee ( VW powered open wheel cars) at that time for a hobby. Aftermarket VW products were made by companies like, Bug Pack for instance. They sold several large bore cylinder kits to up the cc's of a VW type 1 engine. Needless to say they were marketed under the name, "Big Bore Kits".
Larger carburetor opening (bore) "Bigger Bore" ? ... "Big Bore Carburetor". It sounded good to me, and proved to make it's name in gas model boating almost 30 years later. Almost like Kleenex, only without the financial compensation.
Now you all know. Isn't it funny how simple the explanation of things are, and how so much confusion can be created along the way?
Thought this would be fun to share because as I am building another VW sand rail at this time, I called Bug Pack yesterday and ordered a "Big Bore" cylinder kit for my new engine, with a smile.
