collet to butch block gap

slipry created the topic: collet to butch block gap

i have finished rebuilding a whiplash and was told the gap from the collet to the butch block gap was to small , it should be one inch . with the shaft saver on i only had about one eighth of an inch . i cut a quarter off the stuffing tube now i have three eighths , why would you need any gap there, you have a quarter inch at the strut . what do you think guys . Sounds like you have plenty. If you have shaft saver on and still have 3/8" free, I don't see the problem. Too much gap is more of a problem. Maybe posting a picture would help confirm though.

Marc. It's 9/16 of cable showing without the shaft saver. I would like to run with it on. Here is a picture of it.

Yes, run the saver against the collet. The only danger in having too little space, is if the motor torques around on it's rubber mounts, the cable can flare out the end of the tube perhaps tearing it up.

There will not be much room there when the shaft saver is on there. 5/16. Of an inch. Think that would be good enough

That will depend on the durometer ( softness/stiffness ) of your mounts. Some mounts are very hard, while others absorb better, but can move around considerably. 3/4" may be more desireable, but it is what it is at this point. Give it a try; you will know quick enough if the tube starts to bell mouth.

Im sure it will be fine. I like to keep the space short also. Too much bare flex is when I've noticed whip and flaring of the brass tube more. Like Dennis said, but the shaft saver against the collet. Should be good to go!

Thanks marc. Now I have piece of mind. Should work real well with the beast motor. I'm real happy with the end result. Just need to get it wet now. This week for sure. :)
