How to secure brass bushing in strut?

Motorboater created the topic: How to secure brass bushing in strut?

My strut bushing seems to be sliding back to the drive dog after a few minutes of running Is there a means of stopping this from happening? Thanks in advance.

Bushing or stuffing tube? Typically in a collet drive setup, there is a brass sleeve bushing used inside the stuffing tube at the strut..it is meant to be free floating. Is this what you are talking about or the entire tube itself moving?

This thing here.

Everything else is OK and staying where it should. After a few minutes of running it seems to slide back out of the strut towards the prop drivedog. Not sure if it's meant to be fixed in there somehow?

You should have about 1/4" gap between strut and drive dog, so it comming out that little will not hurt.

That is how a slip fit bushing works.

If you secure it then it will not get the lubrication it should and most likely if it is secured it can't spin the same either.

Them both spinning can effectively reduce the rpm by one half. Not that the steel in the brass surely spins faster than the bushing in the stuffing tube it must be free.

Flared or shouldered, I let them float. When I grease my cable I pull it out also. The bushing will wipe off any extra grease so by leaving it on the cable it allows me to get more up inside the stuffing tube. It wouldn't hurt if someone made a shouldered bushing with more than 1/4" of shoulder so that it will stay aligned in the strut but I run the stuffing tube in as far as I can into the strut to help that.

How much more than a 1/4"?

I'd think about a 3/8" shoulder. 1/4" for the space for wind-up and another 1/8" to help keep it inside of the strut.
I used the use the flared bushings but switched all of mine over to the shouldered ones.
