Call me cheap...but is the salvageable?

marc created the topic: Call me cheap...but is the salvageable?

Noticed this when doing a maintenance on one of my boats...at first glance it looks ok, but see second picture. About half of the outside strands are broken near the welded junction of the flex/shaft. I'm wondering if this could be salvaged by re-soldering with silver solder? All I have here is Stay-Brite silver solder...what do you guys think? I know I should just chuck it and get a new one but... :D

What will happen is the short pieces will fall off when you bring it up to heat and leave a big void where the broken ends were, I have heated the stub shaft and cleaned out the end and saved that, and the flex could be cut back and reused. I have reused the flex with a longer stub shaft so it can be cut back and reused and get the proper length back.

Thanks. I will keep it on the side for now and might try salvaging the propshaft like you mention Mike. Are these cables soldered or brazed? I thought they were brazed?

Pretty sure they are attached to stuff shafts with @ 15% SILVER SOLDER.

Sta-bright is about 3% silver I believe.

** Save the cable for an application that uses a shorter cable & cut off that section, defiantly don't just re-solder and use it !

Is a $25.00 shaft worth a $75.00 prop?

I know the $25 cable isn't worth losing a prop over... I was just trying to find out if it can be fixed. It will go to the dumpster. :)

Save the stub shaft you never know when you might need it, I use them to make the shaft in the prop gages I do, and I also give them to the guys that run square drives.

I've done it before just to say I did it, but it really isn't worth the effort, wouldnt do it again.
