to Clutch or not to clutch

omega created the topic: to Clutch or not to clutch

guys, preparing a new boat (bought withouth engine) but comes with a clutch set up. I am planning to run a modified Zenoah G26 in the boat and wanted to know what the pro and con for a clutch are. I am also tempted to try out a onboard starter to make the retrieval a non-event. This may add some weight and may not suit for an all out racing application but for convenience sake quite a solution.

Thanks for your feedback !

for convenience and one person launching its a must. get a good quality clutch bonzi,o'neill, whh,.you don't want to run a rtr clutch on a mod engine.the added safety is also nice if your launching in tight quarters.retrieval is also convenient if you don't want to come in hot.

Depends on your plans for the boat.... Full Race Boat or Fun Boat. If you do go for the clutch, I agree with Black Talon ...get a good one. I've been using an O'Neill clutch in my Heat Racing mono for almost 2 years and it performs great at a reasonable price. It's also helpful if you want to make quick tuning adjustments, like a tweak of the carb needles. Launching is made easier and you will find it less likely to kill the engine on a spin out, or slow crawl.
On the other hand , racing purists will tell you it adds weight, causes drag , etc. for racing. So, your choice.

Good Luck!

Hi to all it my first post on here :woohoo: ....They may also tell you its just something else to go wrong.. I use the bonzi clutch on my engines without any problems its agood bit of kit on a single engine but from what ive seen not so good on a inline as a friend has one and it keeps killing them no matter what he trys hes decided to go clutch less now ..It also depends how big your boat is as you may have no room for a clutch.Wayne

Leave the clutch out its one more thing to go wrong adds weight slows you down by a good 4 mph or more and its def not needed.I run a thunderboat with a full mod zenoah and i sometimes launch myself all i do is start her up give a little throttle set the radio beside me drop her in and off she goes then i pick the radio up or my son hands it to me :) ,no high speed launch just a gentle start.Heres a vid of me doing it :) .
