flex shaft lube

seahawkwa created the topic: flex shaft lube

hi all merry xmass to start with .....

just a quick question. ive been gressing and ioling my flex . and remove it after every run and leave it sitting in a tube with transmition oil...

i also run 1/4 scale cars that irun that have chain drive i use motor bike chain lube on the chain .

what ive desided to do is use this chain lube to lube the flex shaft with as it is used to stay on the chain for longer piriods of time then oil or gress.
is this a good ider or total over kill . enny one`s thorts would be great...

is this a good id or bad id:silly:

nothing that keeps grease on the shaft, in the tube for longer periods of time is overkill. Some of us test and test different greases just to find the ones that last the longest.

I have run chain lube instead of grease for many years without any problems. I am running the west coast style with the teflon liner on two of my boats. My third Hydro I running the eastcoast style without the teflon liner in this set up I m using Speed lube. I have had good luck with both. I think the grease keeps the water out better???? Just one mans thoughts.

I've used OMC "Blue Grease" and although fairly expensive it works quite well , I also use and like better a mixture of Penzoil marine grease with a little Felpro C-5a copper base anti sieze added and sometimes in cool weather a touch of motor oil mixed in.
At the same time the copper helps reduce the rf noise (radio inteference) generated by the metal to metal contact between flexshaft and stuffing tube.

CHeers guys for all your input . ill give it a go. ive got one boat running teflon liner and a new boat i put together for a mate that just runns brass tube and flex with no liner and the z or s bend so i was hunting around for better things to keep it lubes up . as the races over here just squirt oil down the tube befor runns . and well the chain lube is in a spary pac i thort it must be a good thing to try . and from what you guys have sead ill defanatly give it a go...

ive just in the past used blue marine gress and leave then standing in transmition fluid . tranmition fuid and then lube it with greese and onox apon reinstalling it .

also when you guys cut your flex shafts down to size to fit into the collet on the engine the round type. do you guys hit the tip once cut with the mig or weld the end again . or just leave it or do you silver solder it . im not refering to the flex to prop shaft but the flex shaft going into the collet at the motor the round clamp type not the squere end . ive just been cutting them down to size and zapping the end tip tith the mig and cleaning it up a bit... also is this good or bad.....seems to work . but if theres somthing better to do ill try it....

I have been using grease that CC Racing sells for the flexshafts this past year. It is the best grease I have come across to date. I grease the shaft at the end of a day's run and it lasts throughout the next day. No re-greasing between runs.

As for the flexcable, it is a good idea to solidify the collet end of the cable to prevent the strands from unwinding. What can happen is the outer strands tighten under load and the inner strands actually loosen since they are reverse wound. then you have a cable with an inner section sticking out making it longer than it initially was cut. Most people just use silver solder on the end of the cable, making sure it goes all the way inside to the inner windings. I use slow heat about 1" from the tip and feed the solder in from the tip of the cable...it will flow towards the heat source. Stay-brite silver solder with liquid flux works great for me. You DO NOT want to overheat the cables as they will become brittle and break.

hi everyone i have just gone to my local shop an asked for grease but they gave me silicon liquid saying it was better than grease. reason being is grease stays in 1 place so once you have started up the grease just spins off where the silicon is liquid so it lubes it at all times. It sounds like a good reason but what do you all think let me know many thanks

Everybody's got their preferences and reasons for liking one over the other. I like the good quality grease myself. Try that stuff they gave you and see. It's the only way to find out! If it's not lubricating enough it will show on the shaft soon enough!

Great looking boat by the way! :)
