strut or stinger ?

Seatard created the topic: strut or stinger ?

So I got a question, on a 50" mono what is the best way to go for a drive, stinger or a strut ? I have a strut on mine but not too easy to adjust, was thinking of changeing to a stinger. Any opinion's ?

Why is the strut not easy to adjust, one nut to loosen it and adjust away?.Usually i make the hole in the transom for the tube a slot up and down to allow good adjustability i then seal it up with silicone and it seems to work well.Just my opinion but a strut is usually faster than a stinger setup.

I would use a stinger drive i think they look better and are easier to ajust as the strut is fixed to the stuff tube. The stinger only part of its fixed to the stuff tube the rest is ajustable .but both do work fine so its down to what you want or can afford

See i dont fasten my stuffing tubes at the transom its just sealed with silicone which gives enough movement for adjuting, never had any problems with them and a strut is faster and i actually prefer the look myself ;) .

In terms of handling and getting the prop out far enough to find cleaner water too bite into, the Stinger drives excel :dance2:
They are the preferred racers set-up.

As to cost and just keeping it simple, a typical strut and brackets Get-R-Done good enough for play boats.

I hate to have to disagree but I don't agree that one is better than the other... you can get a strut further back if required simply by using longer brackets. My opinion is that it is more a personal preference thing... The drive is better for ease of Precise adjustments, where as the strut tends to be much more streamline (usually smaller diameter than drives)for whatever part of it is in the water, so they both have their advantages I think. Again, just my opinion though. :)

Funny how Scott and I disagree often! Sorry Scott, but that's what makes it interesting sometimes. :)

One definite advantage to some stinger drives is the use of a "Cartridge" type extension. In these types the stub shaft stays with the cartridge and is used with a flex ferel type connector using a soldered on square drive cable.
A single set screw is all that holds the assembly in place.
a VERY quick and easy too service & lube cable set up !!

Another advantage of Stinger drives is the the ability to hold trim adjustments. There design offers much greater BEEF within the assembly and holds up better in rough surface drive applications.

Weather a Single turn buckle or Twins holding the output housing, the accuracy and strength is much greater than a strut blade squeezed between two brackets IMO.

Just what ive picked up along the way although some time ago a friend did do some tests in a test tank used by full scale powerboaters to see what worked best as regards drag and the extended strut came out tops i did have some pics and info on the results but no longer have them unfortunateley .Also talking to guys most seem to prefer the strut for speed over a stinger. You can also get a strut further back than most stingers by using a longer bracket. Most struts are thinner so more streamline than a stinger in my opinion.I exclusiveley now use the extended strut over the conventional type which puts the prop further behind the strut blade keeping it in cleaner water so yes i prefer the strut setup.Proof ? nope but as said above we dont have to agree ,that said if you have proof otherwise lets see it.

The stinger is a lot easier to adjust especially if tou want to move the angle 1/4 or 1/2 degree. With a strut, you can eyeball it and tell yourself that is about right where with a stinger, all yoi need is a 1/4 inch wrench and a 5/32 allen wrench and you're good to go.
