Crackerbox Driving Technique

mitchesx created the topic: Crackerbox Driving Technique

I bought an I-Box RTR, with a clutch, and I'm having a hard time getting used to the way it corners. I started with no turn fin, and added one after a couple of barrel rolls in the corner! I still notice it trying to go "slideways" in the corner, and it seems to slide like a saucer on the snow. What's the trick to driving, or is there something I need to change in the setup? I cant let off too much, or I'm coasting... The skeg is single, off set to the right, and the turn fin is 2 inches deep 90 deg to the bottom. I'm running a modified Prather 275.

It's running the way a Crackerbox should!!! lol

I have one also and it's a handfull in the turns. I am gonna try and build the Z-box kit that I have here now and see if it's any different. Apparently this one is faster and turns better.

What you are describing though is typical handling of Crackerboxes that have not been tuned into turning like monos. I kinda like that, it makes it VERY interesting in a race! :)

Do you have a non-trip tab on yours? That will help with the barrel rolls.

Also, I think most Crackerbox guys will agree that mounting the skeg in the center is better than having it offset to the right.

Marc -

I have the skeg, a turn fin, and trim plates. I was afraid you'd say that! LOL. It is fun, and a handful, the pond we run on in the spring is narrow, but the river we run on in summer it may be able to be ran a little harder in the corner. The turn fin is about 2 inches below the bottom of th hull. What gets me is the clutch - is there anyway to adjust the sensitivity of a clutch? IF I let off a little too much, it might as well be a powerslide!

I know what you're saying about the clutch. Two years ago I bumped another Cracker with mine in a race because I slowed down too much to avoid him and the clutch disengaged, was just like letting off the gas on a jetski and trying to turn. Luckily I wasn't going fast and didn't do any damage to either boat. I have since removed the clutch.

Only thing I could see you could do to the clutch is find softer springs that would allow it to engage at lower RPM. Not sure if they are available. Never seen them. Maybe you could find something that would work from other applications, not sure.

As for the Skegg, I just checked and the Z-box has it mounted in the center...I am sure moving it to the center on your I-box would help a lot also. Also as mentioned above the "NON-TRIP" tab on the outer port side helps a LOT with the barrel rolls. Not sure if you know what kind of tab I am talking about? It has it's outer edge bent up to help prevent hooking of the side of the hull as it turns.

I have never seen a non trip tab. Do you have an example you could post a pic of? Where did you get yours?

I made mine by modifying an existing regular trim tab. Here is a picture. I will be making new ones which will be longer...the rules allow 4" behind transom, so mine will be close to that length on the new Cracker.

That's pretty cool.... How'd you attach it to the existing tab? My tabs are a lit closer to the strut, will I still be able to try something like this?

I used rivets and filed them down as much as I could on the underside. Typically you want this non-trip as close to the chine as possible. The new ones that I make will have the non-trip as part of the original tab...no rivets. It works fine like this though.
