Exhaust Mounting?

SeanSheppard created the topic: Exhaust Mounting?

Hello all,
I am rigging a 56 inch canopy mono, using a stock Zenoah 260 coupled to an aluminum dry exhaust system with 2 inch power band supplied by :? Enforcer. I am in a quandary about whether I should pass the pipe through a hole in the transom (leaving a hole in the boat but keeping the C of G low) or passing it over the transom and cutting the cowl instead ? Will there be a large change in lateral C of G using the second option? The boat will be run mostly on salt water in moderate chop, and my previous boats tend to fill up with water thru the hole in the transom while waiting on rescue in choppy seas!
All comments welcome,
Sean

56" monos are usually pretty deep. I am assuming this is something like an Enforcer mono? If so, I would run the pipe through the transom as high as I can while keeping it in the transom. It most likely will not stick out all that much. Once you find the proper length, you can look into sealing around the pipe with a silicone gromet of some kind if water infiltration is a concern. If its a shallow mono then running out over the transom might be an option. You could also do it with a deep vee, but it will definitely put a lot of weight up high. Just my opinion. Post some pictures of the boat if you can, maybe my opinion will change. :) BTW, welcome to Modelgasboats.com! :drinks:

Thanks so far,
Will put pics up later today when I get back from the workshop.
The hull is a locally built cut down 56 Apache type hull with a canopy style cowl, very similar in appearance to the insane canopy.
It is the most popular hull out here in Trinidad WI due to it's outstanding rough water handling. Most racers here run in the modified class with steel pipes, so it is my understanding that the reason for going over the back is to keep exhaust temperatures down.
I am preparing this boat for my son to begin racing in stock class......okay okay for my son and I to begin racing in stock class!
My other boat is a 46 inch Apache with a mildly modded Zenoah 23,which runs really well as a fun boat, and our first boat was a used Arapaho which had major handling issues in our seas, and became the organ donor to the 46!

Here's a link to the Trinidad and Tobago Model Power Boat Club which is not very up to date, there are a few pics of the canopy Apache there : www.ttmpbc.com/ and www.ttmpbc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4
