Rudder servo is changing its center position

Procat created the topic: Rudder servo is changing its center position

I have encounter a strange problem, I'm using Futuba 2.4 Fast radio system, which I Think is great by the way , but lately when running my hydro and after a run with no steering issues, the next time I turn on the radio The rudder servo has recentered itself and is so far out of trim can not be reset by trimming the radio, I just bought a new Hi-tec 1/4 scale servo , so I know it is not bad, the radio box is getting some condensation, and I wrap the receiver in balloons before use and remove them after.
Has This happened to anyone else? Thanks in advance for any info.

My first shot is moisture in the servo feedback pot , If you have another servo, substitute it and see if the problem goes away..I think you said it is a HiTec servo..HiTec has the best customer service I've seen , if the servo is the problem send it back for repair...

Second shot is the arm on the servo is slipping on the servo output shaft or the servo/radio box is moving around inside the boat.

I keep all the empty spaces in my radio box filled with paper towels to absorb the moisture and remove them after a days running or a good dunk whichever comes first..

Don't store the boat with a sealed radio box...

Ed Thanks for reply - Brand new servo is doing the same thing, arm is not stripped, radio box is part of the boat, Insane gen 3 hydro, aeromarine servo trays bolted to ply, glued to bottom of box not moving,
Could the receiver getting moisture cause this?
I usually remove the balloons and untape radio box lid after that days running.
Thanks again - Has Anyone else had this happen?

Have you recently DROPPED the transmitter ?

* Another place to check is the RUBBER around the steering wheel, it can slip back against the radio case causing drag and could prevent wheel from finding it's center position ?

I have not had this happen per say, but I know moisture can cause electronics do do some funky stuff! The radio box in my Insane Gen3 hydro was the same, always tons of moisture in it. I checked and checked and tried to find where water could be entering it and never did find it. Some guys had a theory of cold and hot air flow around the built in box... who knows. But they do make a lot of moisture. Some receivers are more sensitive to moisture than others. Do you have a spare receiver you could try? You could also try a little pouch of desiccant inside the balloon inside with the receiver to try and help absorb any moisture that gets inside.

I have been using corrosion inhibitor foam emitter for the past 2 seasons in all my radio boxes now and it seems to be working wonders. When I build a new box, I seal it up with everything inside and a piece of the foam emitter. Keep it sealed up for 24 hours prior to first use. All electronics get a micro coating from the inhibitor emitted by the foam and it protects everything against corrosion, including receivers, batts, servos, switches, you name it...anything metallic. Nice thing about it is it leaves no apparent mess like Corrosion X does.

Keep us posted.

If the throttle servo is working properly and a second rudder servo continues to give the same problem I think Scott may be onto something with the transmitter..

And here is another possibility--

I remembered a fellow who had a similar problem and it turned out to be a stripped-wrong size thread in a ball end rod connector ,seems he had a 6/32 connector on a 4/40 rod and it would give under heavy pressure each time he ran it...He spent a lot of time adjusting linkages until he found it....

Just a quick little addition to the radio box moisture subject. Go into the bathroom and grab some of your wifes/girlfriends tampons. Pull it out the cardboard aplicator and you have super absorbant material with string attached. When it does get wet you can easily remove it from your plug hole, if you use one that is. I use the Futaba 2.4 Faast system in both my gasser and nitros and have never had the problem you speak of.:?
Ten to one it's moisture, you can seal a brand new servo with liquid electrical tape or plasti-dip and just use a bit of sicone grease around the horn, the problem is if moisture does find its way in then pulling the servo apart for service is a pain.

Scott - thanks for reply I know what you mean about the rubber wheel slipping down against the transmitter, but this is different and really becomes off center bad, I think the transmitter has got knocked over but is working fine in my cat,
Marc - I think you and Stan are right I got to go back to putting something to absorb the moisture and cut a plug into this cover
Ed - Now that you mentioned it I will check the carbon fiber steering rod to see if maybe it is sliping, but I don't think so,
I'm thinking the transmitter got moisture and is causing this, I do have one I can take out of another boat and try.
I let you guys know if it fixes the problem

To the best of my recolection, the pipe on the Insane Hydro runs out over the top of the radio box. While you're running, the pipe gets hot. Very hot. The heat from the pipe could be causing the air inside the radio box to get hot. Then when you bring it in, the pipe cools, the air inside the box cools, and hot air that cools causes condensation.
