homemade flex shaft questions

stacker9000 created the topic: homemade flex shaft questions

I am planning on building a 54" mono(my first boat)using a 30cc stihl weedeater engine and its flex shaft, what I am trying to figure out is if I use a stinger or strut set for surface drive, there doesn't appear to be any room for a ferrule connecter. So,how can I connect the propshaft, what company would carry the parts, and if it matters I was hoping to make the connection with a loctite adhesive I have read about. Thanks for any input!!And this site is awesome!!!!

The Loctite apparently works well with ferules, but what you are talking about is a welded stub shaft to the flex. I don't recommend trying to make those yourself unless you have a lathe. The prop shaft must be bored for and the flex reduced to fit inside the propshaft, then brazed together (some use high silver content solder). It's tricky to do, and the slightest offset will wreak havoc on your strut bushings. You can purchase those cables already done from companies like Aeromarine Laminates, or Huguey.

If you want to use a ferule, you need a space between the transom and the strut. You can always use longer strut brackets to get the required spacing. Making your own flex setup using the ferule is easy and you can use the proper Loctite or solder.
