venom05 created the topic: 65in GTX drive

Hi all,
i would like everyones opinion on a drive set up on my 65in expresscraft gxt that i am just about to start building up. i wont something that looks very nice and works well. Was going to go with a single MHZ stern drive but the more people i talk too , they say dont. It will have a twin inline zen, not sure where i will get the engine from yet was thing of one from bonzi.

Any ideas would great.

Also my rc everingham is going very very good, will post some more vids of it soon . just about to send it to the paint and airbrush shop

Thanks again

Wish I could help you with the drive selection, but I've never used those. All I've ever used were struts and stinger drives like the Speedmaster and Insane. That's a big boat you are building and I'm assuming you want the scale look. The MHZ drives sure do look good. I know there are others out there too, but really not sure how reliable any of them are. Hopefully someone with experience in these will chime in. Keep us posted!

Those boats like a twin drive but the MHZ are very $$$ and do require some maintenance
There are lots of choices out there for twin inline Zens including a new one from Warehouse Hobbies, I build a few twin engine boats and am doing 2 inlines right now and own 3 other twin (side by side Cats. Twins are cool but are also twice the tuning.
If u are not a newbie u can get a RedLine adapter and join 2 yourself or if u want power (probably for same price as Bonzi) get ahold of Sonic Racing (in AU however) but builds awesome inline Zens

Here's a link to a buddy's build process for something your size and kinda what u were thinking of it's a 55 but show what he went though ... some tough changes

Good Luck - send me a email if u need help with 'twins'

Randy,
Result 8215 rpm and 37 mph???? There is something very, very wrong with that twin setup!! :dash:

Single zenoah on a Z-drive works fine (preferably do not use the overdrive version). Twin Zenoah on a Z-drive can work, but be carefull with adding on the power.

That video is of a friends Aussie boat - he made the video to show that just ;cause stuff SHOULD work .... it's not always so

His boat is a lot better now

My twins do a lot better than that ... here is last twin first time out - no tuning and some cheaap 2 blades ...can't wait for tuning and some good blades

Out of curiosity Randy - how do you know "Those boats like a twin drive". I am not sure I have ever seen an Expresscraft GTX setup with twins and I am sure I have been following them closely.

Not to sound harsh - but that build looks like it was done with zero experience. To consider turning a pair of 7516/3's behind a single zenoah through an overdriven gearbox...... WOW. It was painful to watch!! There is nothing "Should work" about it - it wont work!!

All he needed to do was run the right sized props on there and he might have stood a chance (though not much of one). Then to make in an inline and again see her flail around the pond with the same oversized props..... wow. :dash:

You dont run a single 7516/3 behind a stock zenoah - why would anyone think it will work through an overdriven gearbox?

All I was showing was not everything goes as u think it should. When u are new to boats (which buddy in video is) but want to try something diff u get advice some good some bad ... it;s pretty obvious to anyone 'into' boats for a bit (I see u on Jims so I understand where u are coming from) that this props were not even close.
He posted the video to show what not to do ... not how to build a MHZ driven 55.
The Expresscraft very close in size to MHZ GTX XXX
I;ve seen ur Petes GTX so I know u worked with these before

heres one GTX XXX 63"

heres a MHZ Showtime also close in size 66"

Kiton 50" turbine

Quote from MHZ on GTX XXX Mucle and power recommends gearbox and drives

Our scale replica of the XXX Muscle has unbelievable rough-water capabilities. This very large model requires very large model engines. Suitable powerplants include our Twin 2 x 26 Blue Line, our Polini 50 or Blata 40. Specially with the Blata, using our gearbox allows driving twin Speedmaster S6 Z drives, replicating the spectacle of it's real example. Alternatively, two Trimax drives could be used with two of our XXX rudders.

My son wants to do a MHZ GTX XXX over the winter so we too have been following these close

Oh as a note: I even pointed out at top of it was a justaddwater add for these drives for sale in Jim's

Not trying to 'p' off some one who has way more experience than me (like your self) ... but I'm pretty sure we will follow MHZ recommendations (maybe not there drives cause like yours 1000.00 is pricey) but will use 2 drives

We have had very good luck using the Speedmaster hardware on the large boats. We carry a prop for the inline motors as well. If you have any questions on the motors shoot me an email.
