Hi everyone, I bought a stinger drive for my 48" gas boat but I don't know how to waterproof the piece, there's roller bearings installed in it but is there any seals??

Hi Welcome to MGB

Posting a picture what you have is always best .... but
- Most stingers are not sealed - they either have bushings or bearings in them
- They are either fed grease (or oil) from stuffing tube (brass metal tube your cable runs in)
- many are sealed (with O ring) to back of boat so the grease or oil runs from stuffing tube through the stinger and out that way then stinger gets lubed
- Some stingers also have a small hole in the barrel of the stinger so you can grease or oil them directly there when servicing your boat

Post a picture - but most do not have seals - but do have O ring to seal stinger to boat

Cheers

Randy

No seals. They get lubricated by the grease you put on the shaft. I always spray WD40 into the stinger when I finish running for the day to displace any water in the roller bearings. Some guys like to drill a small hole in the stinger so they can use a small grease gun to grease the stinger in between runs. Doug

No seals on that stinger - you lube it through the little brass fitting on barrel. The fitting is between the 2 bearings so it will lube each of them.

A little grease gun like ProBoat sells is handy for that. Oh if you have a chain saw shop around they sell 'tip' greasers for chainsaws that you can load with your grease

This type (Chainsaw) you load with your grease

The brass tube (5/16") stuffing tube it's called should extend about 3/8" thru the transom - most guys use piece of 11/32 over the 5/16 where it comes thru transom - and use a t-bar to secure tube in boat.

The tube should extend the 3/8" thru the boat and I add a small o ring over the tube to help seal it to stinger

that way your grease is sealed in tube all the way thru stinger -- if there is grease in tube and the boat is moving - water will not go 'up' the tube

This Easy V kit shows tube install - page 26 - 28 --- it shows tube being cut flush with transom - if you let it stick out 3/8" you can install a O ring over it and helps seal stinger to boat
May be good for you to have a look through Zipp Easy V instructions as looks similar to what you are building.

What stops water from going up tube is
  • Cable turning pushes grease to rear or back of boat
  • Proper sized brass tubing 5/16" ,014 Wall K&S #1151
  • Enough grease in tube

Maintenance -- you may get small amounts of water up tube when boat sitting and grease getting thin (after running a bit)

Maek sure you install floatation like in Zipp Manual above

What kind of drive is it? Who makes it? I wasn't aware of anyone using roller bearings. I know I don't use them in my stuff. They are too likely to wear a groove in the shaft which could cause a catastrophic failure.

Looks like a Chinese manufactured stinger that is sold by a number of people on the web. I have a very similar stinger. It works quite well, but you are right, they can wear the shaft. You have keep an eye on the shaft. Doug
