Anyone running camping fuel?

Mercury94 created the topic: Anyone running camping fuel?

Is anyone running camping fuel? If so what ratio of oils? Will it work in modified engines? I do know it burns faster and can be beneficial to small displacement high rpm engines.

yep been using it for a long time. Use the same ratio you were using in your reg gas as far as oil goes
I myself run 8-10 OZ HP2

I have been running Coleman Camp fuel (White Gas) for 2 years now. The cost is a little more than at the pump, However, you have no worries about additives and gunk in the fuel that will clogg a diaphragm. Also doesn't smell near as bad as pump gas, Another plus of white gas, You can store it all winter long and not have to worry about it going bad.

I've never used it yet, mostly because of cost (it's VERY expensive here, more so than nitro would be), but I'm considering trying it out this year. The cost savings in carb diaphragms alone might be worth it! :)

We did extensive fuel testing including camp fuel in a modified Zenoah for an article in the latest NAMBA Propwash at www.namba.com It should answer your questions on the power of different fuels and oils.

Lohring, Interesting article for sure. Would you expect camp fuel to perform better at high altitudes? I never put a tach on one but I would swear our gas planes ran better when we would run camp fuel. The place I used to fly was 6500 ft above sea level. Could never tell the difference any other time.

I wouldn't expect any difference, but I've been fooled so many times that I would need to run the tests at altitude to be sure. I've had major problems racing gas boats at the two Colorado Nationals. You really need to prop down. Nitro boats don't have as many problems because they carry oxygen in the fuel. Specialty racing fuels with oxygenating agents might help. Our testing with nitro in gasoline as well with nitro and methanol were disappointing. Since you can't change compression or ignition timing, it's hard to take advantage of special fuels. VP's U-2 was a great oxygenated fuel for Quickdraws, but it's not made any more.

Lohring,
I have been blending oxygenated 97 unleaded race gas ( Trick GP ) with White gas for a few years now. Have no dyno print outs to prove of disprove it's performance ... just lots of water time testing. The Trick GP at @ 97 and white gas @ 55 octane ratings when mixed 50/50 gives an @ 76 octane rating and has worked Very well FYI.
I do run my pipes short, exhaust durations about 180 and prop on the smaller side spinning engines under only moderate loading. This gives a VERY VERY stable power delivery given air temperature, humidity and altitude changes I typically face here on the west coast.

I have thought of doing just that Scott
Now you really have my brain thinking about it

We tested lots of fuel combinations that weren't in the published article. Even nitro/alcohol/gasoline combinations (E10 & E85 with up to 15% nitro) didn't give obviously better power. I'm not against camp fuel. It may be better for engines in long term running. All our tests show is that when you are limited in what you can change to fuel mixture settings, there is no magic fuel that boosts power noticeably. Pipe and engine porting combinations give huge power increases over stock engines. Proper prop matching is equally important. Those are the places to look for performance.
