My new boat !!!

dpg10 created the topic: My new boat !!!

after three weeks of building i finally finished my 46 inch long wooden V hull. the design was 100% custom no plans. I have 25 cc weedy motor. the boat handles perfect in the water, steers great but i only have one problem. I have the wrong prop. I have x470 prop and it tops out at 20-30 mph. Low end i give it full throttle and it just revs up. I have to rev it up for it to plane off them the RPMs slow down. After it plaens off i Ill go full throttle and there is no change in Speed or RPMS. i get the same speed at full throttle that i get at quater throttle. What prop should i get ?

Congrats on the build!
It looks good on the water. B)
We will need to know what type of setup you have on the back to be able to help you more.
Surface/sub-surface drive?
Clutch/no clutch?
I usually start with a X472 on my weedy boats and go from there.
Sounds like cavitation may be your problem but without more info its hard to say.
Does it get up out of the water and ride on the rear 3rd?
Could also be plowing the nose in.
How deep is your V?
Have you got strakes on the bottom?
Where is your COG?
We really need more pics of the hull and setup to nut this one out!

Awwwww! Your little engine is sooooo cute!

A few things I noticed that you could improve.

Replace your steering rod with a straight one, when you turn you put a lot of load on the rudder and that bent rod will cause the boat to handle eratically at any speed through a corner.

You get best results on a mono with the leading edge of the rudder about level with the trailing edge of the prop. You may want to bring the strut further forward or place the rudder further back.

You need your COG set at about 30% for the set up you are running to help it get on plane easier and stay there.

What you describe sounds like you are cavitating to get up on plane & then bogging down once you are up on plane. A few things you can do

- Sharpen and balance that prop. I think that will help you a lot and is the first thing you should do.
- Try a smaller prop (try a prather P270)
or
- Lift the strut up a bit so that the bottom of the strut is about 10 - 12mm above a straight edge run from the keel. This will let the prop unload better and rev harder once on plane.
- Check your carb setting to make sure you are not running too lean (I don't know the screw settings for a homie, but someone on here will.

my weedy isnt a homelite it is a off brand. but it has a walbro carb on it, i didnt mess with the stock settings. i have the x470, that prop is cupped, do you think i should get a 470 with out cupping. But i think i might buy the smaller prop. would it be less pitch or smaller diamter? prather P270 is what you recommeded. you guys are the experts. How responsive our your boats when you hit the gas?

With a sharp prop on my boat it will leap forward when I hit the gas, I am running a modified zenoah on a race hull though.

Sharpening and balancing the prop you have will definitely help it get moving quicker as it will bite the water better. Once you have it accelerating right, start playing with the strut height to get the engine to maintain revs. Keep in mind that when the prop is cavitating or airating, there is little load on the engine and it will rev higher than it should.

The Prather 270 & 275 are good alround props that work in most monohull applications. Buy one professionally balanced and sharpened and see how it goes, buying a stock prop won't help unless you balance and sharpen it yourself. There is a how to on this site if you want to give it a go yourself. It is a tedious process, but very satisfying when you get it right.

Hi,
There is lots of great advice on offer for you to improve your hull's handling and to get it up on plane easier. But you have to remember it is still a weedy. When I started years ago all I had was a weedy and it only ran about twenty to thirty miles an hour also, but with a little more experience I am sure you will have it dialed in. Much higher speeds come with experience and a little (???) more money spent with higher power engines and tuned pipes.
Keep us informed with your progress. (You WILL get there).
