Counter rotating props! Help me!

Woodie created the topic: Counter rotating props! Help me!

Someone please help me out here!

I have allready purchased the Blata 40 WRX marine, and the MHZ Gearbox for Twin Z or S6 drives-reversible mhzusa.com/MHZ-Gearbox-for-Twi...le-m-1570-T.htm
My intention was/is to buy two MHZ S6 stern drives: One with normal rotation and one with counter rotation, as this is what the gearbox delivers.

But my retailer i Germany is trying to convince me that two normal rotating drives is what I need inspite that one of them will be couner rotating the prop!

Should'nt I have one S6 stern drive specially for counter rotation in order to put a counter rotating prop on it?
I Mean: Can you get a counter rotating prop to mount on a normal rotating drive? And if so, would'nt I risk it to fall off because of the props treading will be turning the wrong way?

This will not be a cheap bargain. So any good help will be very much appreciated!

Cheers! :cheer:

Since you already have the counter-rotating gearbox, I see no other option but to go with counter-rotating drives and props. It is true that having both in normal rotation works well, but with the gearbox already purchased, if you wish to use it, you will have to continue with the C.R. parts. Finding a good selection of C.R. props is an issue here in North America, so most of us use same rotation for twins, and it does work quite well.

What I would research is IF the reverse rotation drive does so within gearbox and actually requires same rotation input from engine as the standard drive does ?
* Or if indeed INPUT from engine/gearbox etc is needing reverse rotation ?

Understand ?

Thanks Marc (again). :)

To my german retailer, I will insist to get one of the drives as counter rotating, as I expect that the treading on the counter rotating drive and a counter rotating prop should be "counter rotating" too.
Apart from a good balanced run, I imagine this should the way to avoid "unpropelling" the counter rotating propeller at up to 27.500 rpm?
I would hate so buy a wrong drive just to see a 70 $ propeller join the fishes...
Am I right? Or am I right? (Hope so)

Scott.

Thanks.
To be honest, I don't understand.

Engine rotates the "normal" way. Power is sent by a single flexicable to a gearbox, that divides the power into two cables: One "normal" rotating, and one counter rotating. Should'nt the counter rotating flexicable be connectet to a an outside sterndrive build for counter rotation too?

Yes it should. And, also make sure the flex cable itself is wound reverse for the reverse drive, otherwise it will unwind under load. The term "reversible" used for the MHZ gearbox only refers to both props screwing inward or both screwing outward...that is selectable.

There were stern drives like the Kenelos that reversed props rotation WITHIN the lower gearbox, but input rotation was still CCW on both the CW & CCW output drives.
* Basically in terms of a conventional stern drive one is in forward and other in reverse having direction OUTPUT SHAFT at prop turns one of internal gearing.

So my question is WHEN YOU are using a gearbox that has INPUT turning CCW and outputs split CW & CCW .... IS THE STERN DRIVE UNIT in question designed to take CW input rotation and deliver output rotation in direction you are wanting ?

Savvy ?

Hi Scott.

To be honest I am getting confused at this point, as I don't understand all that you write, and most of all not your short terms. (Remember: I'm not just danish, I also know close to nothing about engines and drives - even in danish).

Maybe I should contact www.mhzusa.com ?
They have a package including two sterndrives with the gearbox, that I allready have purchased from Germany.
Should I drop my german retailer (just at this point) and buy the sterndrives from USA (eating the extra costs and taxes at shipping from USA to Europe) just to get it right?

Or should I simply follow Marc's advise and buy a normal and a counter rotating sterndrive from Germany to fit the rotations from the gearbox?
Could It be that simple?

Cheers! :cheer:

Woodie. I think MHZ Germany has withdrawn the rights of MHZ USA for their products due to so many problems. There is a posting on Jims re this. Sounds like they speak English, and if you alos do, then try phoning them to sort out your drive requirements. From what I've read ove rthe last year, I'd certainly be listening to Scott as he has a wealth of experience going back many years.

I'm lucky in that I have a local model boat shop in Auckland NZ (QDRevenger) and they give me the best advice on all things boat.
Cheers
